Actor/Singer Ahn Jae-wook Set to Captivate Japan

Korean actor and singer Ahn Jae-wook may now captivate Japan after he consolidated his status as the pioneer of the Korea Wave, or Korean pop-culture craze, in China. Ahn is now in Japan to give his first concert there at the NHK Shibuya Center in Tokyo on Friday.

His popularity in Japan was already apparent as soon as he arrived at Narita Airport, where some 1,000 Japanese fans greeted him with cries of joy. Most of the fans had sunflowers in their hands because they had previously discussed giving the Korean singer the flower that matches his image. Ahn waved at his fans with a big smile.

Ahn's first album in Japan, "Sounds Like You", released by Pony Canyon is receiving a good response, and his first concert will serve as an opportunity to demonstrate his appeal directly to fans there.

The Japanese press and music industry have also shown keen interest in Ahn, who is expected to gain as resounding popularity in Japan as in China. As a positive sign, tickets for his concert were sold out only 15 minutes after going on sale, and some were traded at more than W400,000 (40,000 yen) on an internet auction site.

Ahn will return to Korea on Saturday after the concert Friday.
