Choi, who received offers from numerous foreign directors in the wake of the global success of "Oldboy" in 2003, chose "Leon" director Luc Besson's action-thriller "Lucy" as his first project outside of Korea.

Scarlett Johansson plays the title role of a drug mule who gains special powers from the narcotic she is tasked with transporting.

Choi went to France early last month to start filming with Johansson and Morgan Freeman. The movie is slated for release in the U.K. and U.S. in August.
