Deadly Island Kills Box-Office Record

"Silmido", an uninhabited and remote islet off Korea's west coast and now the title of a major motion picture, has taken over the big screens at theaters across the country, attracting throngs of action-lovers.
The film, which was opened nationwide on December 24, broke the Korean record for first-week sales with 1.55 million viewers having crowded into the theaters by December 28, including about 40,000 viewers for the preview on December 23. The number of viewers which Silmido has attracted surpassed that of "Untold Scandal", which was attracted 112,500 viewers nationwide during the first four days of its release in October.

Movie analysts attributed this success to two factors: one was Kang Woo-suk, "the number one movie director in Chungmu-ro, the Korean Hollywood", teaming up with Sol Kyung-gu, one of the country's best actors. The other one was that it was released during the "golden holidays" over the Christmas weekend, enjoying the benefits of good timing.

"If this popularity continues, we estimate that it's only a matter of time until the movies attracts more than 5 million viewers", said an official of Cinema Service, the film's producer. "The movie has been crowded with a broad range of viewers, from women in their early 20s to movie-lovers in their late 30s. It is not going too far to anticipate an extraordinary success, bigger than "Friend"."

The stars of Silmido including Sol Kyung-gu, Ahn Sung-ki and Jung Jae-young, toured movie theaters in Seoul during the film's opening, and are planning to hold tours in major cities across the country.
