Film 'King and the Clown' Headed for New Record

The latest Korean hit film, "The King and the Clown" seems poised to break the all-time record set by the film "Taegukgi".

Cinema Service, the distributor of "The King and the Clown" said yesterday that the audience for the movie about a love triangle in the Choson Kingdom reached 11,118,167 on Monday.

By achieving that mark, the film that deals with a love triangle between a King Yonsan, his court jester, Kong-kil and his companion, Jang Saeng, has now surpassed the second-most seen South Korean movie, "Silmido".

The two films, "Taegukgi: The Brotherhood of War" and "Silmido" which were released in 2004, set new Korean records by hitting 11.74 million and 11.8 million in viewership, respectively.

The "Taegukgi : The Brotherhood of War" dealt with tragedy of two Korean brothers. One brother fought for the South and the other for the North during the Korean War. Film industry insiders expected the "The King and the Clown" may well set new records by early next week.

The unexpected mega-hit, the "The King and the Clown" has been generating diverse issues of topic in Korean society. By dealing with a love triangle between the tyrant King, his favorite court jester and his companion, the film has brought the issue of homosexuality to the fore.

But the movie is also embroiled in some legal allegations about the possible plagiarism of some words in the film.
