From Plasmas to OLED, how Korea became No. 1 in TVs

I've done some international travelling lately and, being the tech junkie that I am, stopped into a few electronics stores along the way. One thing I noticed quite quickly was that TVs from Samsung and LG were always displayed in the most prominent spots.

This made me wonder, how long have Korean tech companies like Samsung and LG been the de facto leaders in the TV industry? According to a data from the Ministry of Knowledge and Economy, Korean companies had 46.5 percent market share in the global TV industry in 2009. It has actually been the market leader since it passed Japan way back in 2001.

With the emergence of LCD, which required higher more technological skill, Korean companies grabbed the chance to rise to the top of the industry and Korean companies have become the largest global producers of flat panel displays.

After establishing their lead in plasma TVs and then LCDs, Korean companies immediately began investing time and resources into the next emerging technology – LED back-lit LCD TVs. This effectively secured their leadership for another generation of technology. Beyond business, LED TVs also had the benefit of producing more realistic colors and more realistic-looking 3D images.

Recently Samsung and LG revealed their latest OLED TVs, which are super-slim, highly energy efficient and weigh in at less than 4KG! In other words, these TVs are more aesthetically pleasing and also more environmentally friendly because they require less fuel to transport and less electricity to operate.

The innovation doesn't end here, though. LG Electronics successfully developed a flexible plastic e-paper display that can bend up to 40 degrees. It is only 0.7 mm thick and with this new display material is likely to revolutionize e-book and tablet industries. The company has also been working on color versions of its flexible e-paper displays for several years. Imagine rolling or folding up your tablet computer and slipping it under your arm or in your bag. That's the future. That's Korean technology.Related Posts Plugin for WordPress, Blogger...
