[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Emergency Couple" Episode 6

We get more exposure of the supporting cast than usual here, and I find that as characters, the other interns tend to be a lot more tolerable than our two leads. They just have a much better sense of restraint. This episode one of them does a lot of talking with Chang-min's mom. And that's all it is, just talking. As horribly unreasonable and unlikable as Chang-min's mother has been throughout the drama, it's totally possible to get her to be cooperative just by being polite and non standoffish.

It's too bad Jin-hee is having such trouble with this restraint. I've mentioned this before, and I'll prbably have to keep mentioning it- she doesn't really act like a person who's already been threatened with dismissal several times by this point. We keep going on these extreme doctor adventures, and so far all I've been getting from these is that I would not want to be a patient in the same hospital where either Jin-hee or Chang-min are working.

This problem seeps into her personal life too, as we get a rather odd cliffhanger that seems to have alarmingly little context. Granted, maybe there's a good reason why Jin-hee acts so psychotic at the club- if you saw the preview from last time you probably know the specific explanation. But the drama does not expound on this in a convincing way. It just seems to be another bullet point in a long pattern of extreme behavior.

"Emergency Couple" is just trying too hard with the theatrics. I actually laughed this episode, for the first time in awhile, at a simple gag involving sleep, impulse behavior, and a surprise. It's a dumb silly joke- but this kind of levity is appropriate when the interns aren't working or otherwise acting in a stressful way. It's nice to be able to just relax every once in awhile watching this drama, and not having to overthink matters.

For what it's worth, this is a better episode of "Emergency Couple" than what we've seen recently, because aside from a few specific instances of crazy behavior for the most part we see the emergency ward as being relatively static and calm. However, these moments of ambience aren't enough to shake off the more basic problems in the storyline. Again, a lot could be solved by just having Jin-hee acknowledge that she has a problem with overreacting. I'm not terribly confident we're actually going to get there though.
