[HanCinema's Drama Review] "High School - Love On" Episode 6

I must admit, the previews from last episode definitely fooled me here. It was hard to imagine what possible context could explain the scenes that clearly showed Woo-hyeon and Seul-bi together doing date-like stuff and clearly being called a couple by their classmates. Then we actually get to those scenes and it's just, oh right, this is high school. That place where being teased by peers is really common and it's common to go on social outings that obviously seem like dates even if they're not.

Well, adults do all of this stuff too, honestly, which is the main reason why "High School - Love On" continues to be relatively relatable in the romance department. The main benefit the drama has going for it is that Seul-bi is understandably naive, even while all this scheming and plotting is going on around her. Seul-bi is mainly focused on immediate concerns and, unsurprisingly, misses a lot. Although in the context of this episode none of the attempts to get back at her really accomplish anything.

There's oddly not much humor at this point. "High School - Love On" seems to have mostly abandoned that angle for the sake of just giving us really cute setpieces instead. Not even exclusively among the high school students either- there's a lot of use made here of the angelic teleportation special effect. Which I never tire of personally- it's a good looking special effect and however the visual team is managing it, the actors certainly put on a convincing show.

The serious elements are still present, though, and while there isn't anything terribly awkward, there is the overriding feeling that there really isn't that much of a point to anything that's happening. So far "High School - Love On" has not been doing very much in regards to pay-offs for previously existing plot points. This matter is not helped much by the way the previews tend to spoil most of the major storyloine developments anyway.

Still, in terms of general cuteness, the drama's accomplishing most of its goal and pretty much manages to accomplish all the bare minimums of the genre standards. The main disappointment right now is that "High School - Love On" doesn't seem to be aiming for anything that much more ambitious. A larger storyline plan must exist, or the scene at the beginning of the first episode makes no sense, but as of yet there's little in the way of clues as to what that plan might be.
