[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Don't Dare to Dream" Episode 5

The relationship between Hwa-sin and Na-ri is just so utterly delightful that it carries the entire show on its back. They are both quirky adults stumbling through life and battling the obstacles as best they can. On their journey they are joined by a great host of characters who fill out the story very nicely, especially on the comedy side. The hilarity keeps taking me by surprise, and I absolutely love it.

Let's tackle the people aside from the main leads first. Reporters Kye and Bang, the two ex-wives of Hwa-sin's older brother, are constantly at odds, battling for their pride, for their positions at work, and for the daughter who they both love. All the stress they feel in life, and the hurt and worry for their daughter, is taken out on each other and although they hate each other, I think that their antagonistic relationship could possibly make both women grow up. Joining their duo on occasion is the chef who is like the apartment dad for Na-ri, Ppal-gang and all of the other inhabitants. Both reporters harbor feelings for the good-looking chef and their dynamic with him is so interesting. He doesn't return their affections. Rather, he associates with them in order to protect Ppal-gang, which creates an interesting dynamic between the three adults.

Perhaps my favorite character in the show is Hwa-sin, the prideful goof of a man with a gooey center that he is loathe to reveal. His internal struggle between his pride and his feelings for the unpredictable and stubborn Na-ri is such great stuff, especially when mixed with fart humor. Sometimes you just need a good fart joke. Na-ri is a delightful contract to Hwa-sin in her steadfast determination to do well at work despite her pain and despite the extreme blows to the pride that Hwa-sin holds so dear. Plus, Kong Hyo-jin and Cho Jung-seok are such a fantastic comedic pair. I could watch them banter all day about how they are supposed to properly fart.

Jeong-woo is turning out to be a typical sweet second lead with one twist: he is very bold. He knows what he wants and that's giving Hwa-sin a run for his money, especially since Hwa-sin refuses to tell anyone about his breast cancer. His boldness fits in well with such a zany cast and I love how the exaggerated personalities fit so well into the texture of the plot.

"Don't Dare to Dream" is only getting stronger and I'm hoping that trend continues!
