[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Mad Dog" Episode 6

"Mad Dog" drops some big revelations in episode six and although their logic does not quite stand, they radically shift the focus of the dog team's investigations while at the same time spurring major doubts about the story we have seen so far. The team follows Min-joon as he once more goes solo, but a surprising contact brings them back together and adds a new spark to the mystery.

Hong-joo's (Hong Soo-hyun) development continues, even if the motive behind her behavior is the usual thirst for power, rather than a need to know the moral implications of her work. On the other hand, the nonchalance of her father and not-gentleman caller over their deeds as well as their connection to the incident is clear. The reason behind it may be standard greed, but the devil is in the detail. The mystery is ongoing.

Hong-joo accepting her new caseMoo-sin surprised by a new statement

Episode six brings about more surprises from our supporting cast and although the pilot's testimony is supposed to be the big twist, I find Park Moo-sin's (Jang Hyuk-jin) role as a potential ally to be more exciting. His help may still be a trick, but I can also see how he could have chosen to keep his enemies closer by playing the role of the Chairman's own dog. His motives and thoughts are still unclear, but it would be nice if he remained an ally throughout.

Coming back to the pilot now, I find this revelation most unsatisfying. If his testimony after the crash was unreliable, how is a new story told in a confused state of mind in any way more trustworthy? The series presents Min-joon (Woo Do-hwan) as perpetually suspicious, yet he readily believes the truth which suits him. This is normal for any person, but the fact that the series chastises gullibility and then asks viewers to believe a second unreliable statement over the first one feels hypocritical.

If true, it also reveals a pitfall of building mysteries and that is the act of not giving viewers the incentive to engage with them. Kim  Beom-joon (Kim Young-hoon) has been clearly shown as crashing the plane. If the creators injected a false narrative, they have made the mystery unsolvable. Any deductions on our part are made through deceiving information, rendering our efforts to join the puzzle solving fun moot.

There are minor plot logic issues with the episode as well, such as Min-Joon apparently not having seen the post-crash interviews. The man became a spy genius over the course of three years, yet he seems to be missing some crucial information. How did he ever get this far? On a more positive note, the bromance might start forming soon, which should make the show more interesting if done well.

"Mad Dog" is directed by Hwang Ee-kyeong, written by Kim Soo-jin-V and features Yoo Ji-tae, Woo Do-hwan, Ryu Hwa-young, Kim Hye-sung and Jo Jae-yun.
