[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Moorim School" Episode 13

All of the clunky mechanizations of "Moorim School" have cobbled themselves together to reveal several truths and leave our characters reeling. The school is in utter chaos as per the bad guys' nefarious plans. The kids are struggling to come to terms with the revelations and they are not yet ready to reach out for help and comfort.

While the individual brooding and thinking and crying is actually well-deserved, the sequence of events that lead up to these depressing activities is awkwardly formed. Over the course of the show, Si-woo has gone from a hot-headed youth to a yoda-like hero. I didn't notice how strange his behavior was until now. He's less like a character who changed over time than a character who was changed because the writing who was inconsistent. I also found it strange that he was just as upset as his friends who had major changes thrust upon them.

Chi-ang realizes his father doesn't care for him as he wishes and that hurts. I like his moments of contemplation and growth. The only thing that's strange about it is that he didn't once go to see Seon-ah. Aren't they really good friends? She did just find out her adoptive father potentially killed her biological daddy and is all weepy and heartbroken. It's good to see her take a stronger role in the quartet of friends because she's been often relegated to sidekick status.

The bad guys in this have turned comic book. Seriously. One cackles out loud and stares at his hands that "hold" the power. Their evil intentions are so obvious that they might as well wear signs around their necks stating, "I'm evil. Don't trust me". In any case, the bad guys now have power over the school and it's up to the students and Dean Hwang to take back what's theirs. First the kids have to get over their tears, Chi-ang has to climb on board and go against his not-so-nice parental unit, and Seon-ah has to accept that her father isn't really her father, but he's still a nice guy.

The friendship between Chi-ang and Si-woo has been strained and it may be on the mend as Chi-ang realizes his father isn't who he wants to become. He's finally stepping away from needing to please a man who will never be pleased. Si-woo is gaining his friend back and trying to deal with the mysteries of his past.

An aside: where was Sam Okyere in this episode? Conspicuously absent our fun Ghanian friend was!
