[HanCinema's Drama Review] "My Love from the Star" Episode 14

Be forewarned- most of this episode is just a flashback. Don't worry, the drama's not screwing around with you or anything. Within the first few minutes it will immediately be clear what happened after Song-I made that jump, and how Min-joon reacted to the news. You'll be waiting until the end, though, to find out what Min-joon is doing in full, which is just as well. The man spends so much time not taking the situation seriously, I really want to enjoy it when he finally snaps.

So, the beginning, good stuff. The ending, good stuff. The special effects in "My Love from the Star" have always been a high point, and they're used to great effect in Min-joon's rampage, really emphasizing what he's capable of and how this man is actually very, very scary. He should have been acting like this from the beginning. I know Hwi-kyeong's not just going to roll over and give up, but at least now we're hopefully going to get better villain behavior than his just being a generic thug.

The flashback...is kind of more ambivalent. There is some essential information in here which we really need in order to hit the ending, but it's not so much information that it needed to be stretched out for this long. What it mainly establishes is that while most of the characters are in the dark about the exact nature of the storyline, now we know that several of them have figured out a significant chunk of what's going on.

Hwi-kyeong continues to be more interesting than his character has any right to be, given he's the second male lead character in a drama where the primary male is an alien with superpowers. There's a very clear, direct contrast between his more playboyish partying self and his sinking realization that his brother is, well, actually pretty evil. I continue to be more interested in him that Min-joon, simply because Hwi-kyeong actually has a good reason to keep hesitating.

Hopefully this is finally the point in the drama where serious stuff starts happening- "My Love from the Star" seems satisfied as far as the love story is concerned, and the climax is just insane. It's hard to imagine any of the characters just walking away from this blow-up resolved to do nothing- not when there's so much direct evidence out in the open. Granted, I've been optimistic on this before. If the drama can't deliver all the way through after going this much, though, really it's just time to give up altogether.
