Jang Nara's Success in China Studied in Academia

Singer Jang Nara's successful debut in China as a television drama actress and a singer has recently been subjected to academic scrutiny. According to Jang's website on April 4, MediaChina.net featured a thesis on March 31 that describes Jang's success as a top star in China from an academic point of view. Entitled "The Success of Korean Dramas in the Chinese Market Analyzed from the Media Perspective", the thesis was written by a student in the Department of Media at Heilongjiang University in China.

In the thesis, the student pointed out that the secret of South Korean dramas lies in the successful implementation of a "star mechanism" that is interlinked with a "star consumer market". He cited Jang Nara as a typical example of that mechanism.

"Thanks to her success as a television star, Jang Nara has emerged as the most sought-after model for cell phone, beverage, cosmetics and apparel TV commercials. By signing a contract with a Chinese shoe company last year, she naturally secured a foothold to establish her presence in Chinese show business as well", the thesis stated.

The thesis also provided a detailed account on Jang's activities in China since her debut. It said Jang announced her official expansion into China by signing a contract with CEO of Guangdong Greatstar Group Dung Kon-kuk, and this year in January showcased her debut album at the National Representatives' Hall, the largest political venue in China.

"In the relatively short period of time of just two years, Jang Nara has secured a solid position in China as a top-rated TV commercial model, actress and singer, creating a Korean 'star consumer market' in China as well", said the thesis.
