Korea Draws Attention at Cannes Festival

korea dAt 59th Cannes Film Festival, everyone was astonished when an unknown Korean movie entitled "The Host" was given a 2.3 million dollar contract for distribution to more than 10 European countries. The original scenario of the movie already has a deal with Japanese Happy Net Pictures for 4.7 million dollars. The movie has already netted 7 million dollars in international market even before it is released.

One associate from CineClickAsia, the managing company of 'The Host' stated, "The premier for the potential distributors was held twice, yet we couldn't accommodate all who were interested in the movie. People were waiting for more than an hour to see the movie and still couldn't get into the auditorium".

'The Host' is directed by Bong Joon-ho, whose name is well-known in Korea. The movie is invited to the director's week at 59th Cannes Film Festival and earned sensational reviews from the critics from all over the world. Even the New York Times praised the movie as 'the best movie at Cannes'.

On May 23, Manohla Dargis, the long time movie critic at the New York Times, wrote in Cannes Journal about 'The Host' as 'the best film I've seen to date at this year's festival'. In the journal, Manohla Dargis introduced 'The Host' as a creator of new genre
of movie making. He explained that this movie covers every aspects of being a monster movie, SF, thriller as well as heartwarming family, comedy in addition to being a political satire.

He described the atmosphere at the premier, "Audiences are continuously excited about the next scenes. They are screaming at one scene and laughing at another. Everybody was reacting to the movie".

The much expected 'The Host' will be open nation-wide in Korea on July 27.
