"Justice League" ends "Ragnarok"'s reign as foreign films continue to flourish...
Zack Snyder's much-anticipated "Justice League" brings together five of DC's front-running superheroes - Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg - and it didn't come cheap: costing $300 million, "Justice League" is the most expensive superhero film ever produced, and, along with "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End", the second most expensive film overall. The film was released in Korea last Wednesday and quickly overthrew Marvel's latest, "Thor: Ragnarok", at the top of the chart. From 1,308 screens, Snyder's "Justice League" came away with 47.87% of the sales, or 818,401 admissions ($6.3 million),...More

Business is passable, but Doo-sik is in his forties and painfully aware that he has already wasted far too much of his life there and wants to sell. Doo-sik's employee Tae-jeong (played by Doh Kyung-soo) also suffers from financial issues and is desperate for some kind of solution. Only the new guy, Chinese immigrant Han-wook (played by Kim Dong-young) is at all happy with life in South Korea,...More

He suffers an awful turn of luck, as his coach Soo-hyeon (played by Park Shin-hye) watches, horrified and helpless. So it is that the two half-brothers are reunited,...More

"Fantastic Beasts" holds out against "My Annoying Brother"...
The British-American fantasy flick "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" narrowly maintained pole position over Kwon Soo-kyeong's incoming family comedy, "My Annoying Brother". Last weekend J.K. Rowling's adaptation of her own work appeared and captured 68% of the sales (1.4 million admissions), and during its second week out this Harry Potter spin-off added another 895,990 stubs (45%) to bring its bottom line now to $24.7 million (3.4 million admissions). Worldwide, this week's number one has grossed $473.7 million,...More
[Interview #2] Kim So-hyun, "I nearly died in the sea swim scene" 2016/03/07, Source,
There must've been difficulties that followed the good parts. In "Pure Love - Movie", Soo-ok is the daughter of a female diver so she had to be comfortable with water. However, So-hyeon doesn't even know how to swim so she experienced a slight trauma in the sea. The most difficult scene for her was the sea-swimming scene.
Kim So-hyun said, "At the beginning of the movie, there is a scene where I jump into the ocean with my friends. About two days were decided for this. However, on the first day, the water was so deep it scared me. The director wanted the scene to be a long take, but I had swallowed too much water already. It was salty sea water as well. I couldn't do it so I yelled for help. The staff who were in the water were so surprised they lifted me up right away",...More
[Interview #1] How 17-year-old Kim So-hyun prepares for her next drama 2016/03/07, Source,
She had her first real gig at the age of 17. She had to act with those her age without anyone older than her leading the way. It was a big challenge for her. As soon as she was done with a drama, she joined the movie set, and although she couldn't be with the other sisters and brothers as she is still underaged, Kim So-hyun had another experience.
In the movie "Pure Love - Movie", Kim So-hyun appears as Beom-sil's (Doh Kyung-soo) first love and has a crippled leg which forces her to limp. She had to be careful about her leg and concentrate on it the whole time. She prepared for this movie like any other grown-up would have and this is what makes her stand out amongst her fellow actors and actresses,...More
[Funcurve Review] "Remember You" 2016/02/27,
"Remember You" is an interesting mystery thriller with a captivating story told almost to perfection with great dialogue and an even better cast. This story is particularly good because it isn't built solely on the romance between our lead characters. Instead, it uses them as devices to help answer the many questions raised by the main premise of the drama - mysterious murders and how those murder cases are all connected,...More

[Funcurve Review] "EXO Next Door" 2015/09/26,
Every Fangirl's Dream
Living next door to your favorite idol group is every fangirl's dream. That is exactly what happened to awkwardly shy, easily embarrassed Ji Yeon-hee (Moon Ga-young) when EXO (Chanyeol, Doh Kyung-soo, Baekhyun, and Sehun) took a break from touring and moved in next door. Since 'EXO Next Door' is an idol drama, I was not expecting topnotch acting or a fantastic storyline. I was interested simply because - it's EXO. The drama did a great job at making it easy to live vicariously through Yeon-hee. She not only lives next door to EXO, but also gets to interact with them daily. I found this very intriguing as I got to experience everything Yeon-hee did while living and working with the idol group. The length of the episodes also made it easy to keep going, even when the storyline was slow moving or confusing at times,...More
[Funcurve Review] "It's Okay, That's Love" 2015/06/27, Source,
Love Is Hope
I wasn't sure what to expect of "It's Okay, That's Love" at all after hearing that it's about psychiatrists and psychological patients. However the atypical topic did immediately pique my curiosity but also uncertainty of what direction the Korean drama will take. Romance? Mystery? Fantasy? I decided to take a leap of faith and put my trust in two of my all time favorite actors: Jo In-sung and Gong Hyo-jin. I was not let down as the lead actors gave outstanding performances - so good that it was worth shedding tears for. The unexpected bonus was that many of the supporting characters were equally unique and memorable,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Remember You" Episode 1 2015/06/22,
Hyeon (played by Seo In-guk) is a strange man who investigates unusual events just for the fun of it, and likes to mess around with people without ever changing his eerily vacant expression. Ji-an (played by Jang Nara) is a perky detective who is easily provoked by actions obviously intended to stupefy her. Together they...don't actually fight crime just yet. After a rather peculiar opener most of the runtime is dedicated to Hyeon's backstory,...More

Hallyu's two face in China? 2014/12/14, Source,
50 million, 120 million and 200 million won per episode; this is the cost of the Korean drama publication rights in China.
The entertainment industry is smiling at the breeze of Hallyu in China. The enormous Chinese market is no doubt an attraction compared to the limited Korean market.
The more Hallyu enters the Chinese market, the dependence on Chinese capital is rising. When the breeze turns into a chilling wind, no one will know how the situation will turn out,...More
[HanCinema's Busan International Film Festival Movie Review] "Cart" 2014/10/11,
The cashiers and cleaning ladies in "Cart" are constantly told to have faith in the system. That's what the morning loyalty oaths are for. As presented in context, this entire scene looks so utterly ridiculous I would probably have doubted these things even exist except that I already have familiarity with the concept. I guess modern capitalism is an actual religion these days. Makes sense really. If corporations are people with religious beliefs what other God could they possibly have?,...More
