MK Pictures, one of Korea's leading production companies that was formed from the merger of KangJeGyu Films, Myung Film and manufacturing company Buffalo Seshin in 2004, has announced that it will open a distribution arm.
Beginning with Romantic Comedy When Romance Meets Destiny
on November 23, the company plans to release a total of 10 films in 2006 and 12 in 2007, including both Korean and imported titles. The company is in the process of securing a $23m film investment fund that will be used to produce up to six titles of its own per year, and it will also distribute titles from other companies.

The fast changing media contents market is destroying longstanding barriers between filmmakers, broadcasters, talent management firms and mobile carriers.
Film companies are beginning to make television dramas, while broadcasters are producing films. Talent management companies, riding on their rising "star power", are jumping into production projects. Meanwhile, mobile communication carriers are buying up companies that traditionally provided only content.
"Television, theater, game, mobile phone and other media are converging in the name of digital technology", said Kan Han-seop, a professor at Seoul Institute of the Arts. "The entertainment market is now undergoing fundamental changes".
According to industry insiders, burgeoning new media, like digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) and satellite channels, require large, high-quality content and are therefore transforming the traditional contents market. In addition, the rising popularity of Korean pop culture in East Asia is raising demand for content.
In the eyes of traditional content makers or their neighbors, the ongoing upheaval is seen as either a "crisis or an opportunity". They are now emerging from their long-standing home turfs and making forays into neighboring territories.
Last month, Yellow Film announced that it would make a television mini-series called "Someday"
, deploying film director Han Ji-seung
of "A Day" and "Ghost Mama", and scriptwriter Kim Hee-jae

The Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) said Wednesday that it will request a movie production company to halt plans to collect funding for its new movie through the Internet as the plan violated the new asset management laws.
The FSS said that KangJeGyu & Myung Films' plan to fund the entire production cost of 1.95 billion won for its new movie "Annyong, Hyonga (Working English title: Hey, Bro)" from Internet users was a violation of the new law as the company was not registered with the regulator for such funding activities.
"The new laws, which were passed this year, prohibit any collection of funds over the Internet that invest in the production of movies or music albums", an official from the FSS said. "If they also have the intention of giving back part of the profits to the investors without proper authorization, it clearly breaches the current regulations".

Movie companies shine spotlight on stock markets, online sales
Unable to gain access to investors by traditional means, Korean filmmakers are rewriting the script to give stock traders and cyber fans starring roles.
The industry currently generates an estimated 700 billion won ($605 million) per year, which is meager compared to Hollywood where a single project may cost more than $100 million.
But with current blockbusters "Silmido
" and "Taegukgi
" streaking through attendance levels, filmmakers and analysts say the local movie industry has proven that it can produce movies with tremendous commercial value.
"Movies are not yet a driving economic force, but it has the potential to become just that in coming years", said Ko Jung-min, chief researcher at Samsung Economic Research Institute.
For many filmmakers, access to the local stock markets is not possible because they lack enough equity to meet requirements.
However, Myung Films Co. and KangJeGyu Films, ranking No. 2 and No. 3 in the Korean movie industry, figured out the back door is better than standing in line waiting for a handout to enter.
They joined hands last month to merge with Seshin Buffalo Co., an industrial toolmaker that spun off from Seshin Co. on Jan. 16. Together, the threesome created MK Buffalo Co., set to be officially launched next month.
More importantly, Seshin Buffalo is a publicly traded firm, meaning automatic access to the Korea Stock Exchange for the two filmmakers.
"Some may disapprove of the way we entered the market, but we see it as the best possible alternative considering that the chances of getting listed were pretty dim for us", says Park Jin-gyu of Myung Films.
MK Buffalo plans to finance movies at its newly installed filmmaking division with the profit generated by Seshin Buffalo.
