Korean Megabox opened a multiplex cinema in the Chinese capital Beijing on July 4. With this feat, Megabox became the first international participant in the Beijing cinema market. Megabox' Beijing branch is co-build and co-owned with China.
Megabox distinguishes itself from its competitors by offering (VIP) memberships and a reservation system through the internet and by phone. The multiplex belongs to the five-star cinemas in Beijing.
Megabox Beijing is situated in a shopping mall in the Zhongguancun district and has a capacity of eight screens, comprising 1,700 seats. Megabox plans more multiplexes in two other prime Beijing locations, including Sanlitun, by 2008. With those three cinemas, Megabox will have a 25 screens/5,400 seats capacity, making it a considerable party in the Beijing cinema scene.
CJ/CGV and MK Pictures entered the Chinese cinema market sooner, they own multiplexes in Shanghai.
