Must-Sees at JIFF

One of the many attractions of the Jeonju International Film Festival (JIFF) is its omnibus film presentation, Jeonju Digital Project, which offers three half-hour film contributions by three talented international filmmakers: Pedro Costa of Portugal, Harun Farocki of Germany and Eugene Green of France.

Correspondences

Directed by Eugene Green
The film tells of the issue of communication and love in a modern society. Virgile is a 17-year-Oldboy, who exchanges emails with girl of the same age, Blanche, without knowing each other very well. He talks about issues like life and death, and she shows interest. He likes her, but she likes a boy named Eustache. One day, Eustache comes to visit them.

Respite

Directed by Harun Farocki
The silent film is made with the combination of documentary footage filmed in Westerbork, a transit camp for deportees to Bergen-Belsen and Auschwitz. The footage was taken as a German official ordered an inmate to film peaceful scenes at the camp. But with the arrival of a train on Tuesdays, deportees fear they will be sent to the notorious camps. Between footage, the interpretation by the director is given in the form of subtitles.

The Rabbit Hunters

Directed by Pedro Costa
The film takes the genre of a documentary, which depicts the lives of the poor in a city. On the outskirts of Lisbon, Portugal, villagers lead a materially poor yet peaceful and ordinary life. But they are persuaded to look for a new and better life. As the village is on the verge of facing sudden changes, people are confused by how to deal with them.
