Rising to the challenge

Kang Hye-jung, 23, won the prestigious Blue Dragon award for Best Supporting Actress earlier this month, for her role as Mido in "Oldboy", joining the ranks of the stars in Korea.

Mido is a young Japanese seafood chef and the love interest of Oh Dae-su, played by Choi Min-sik. Kang's convincing performance as the innocent and vulnerable Mido, aroused the viewers' sympathy for the character.

A well-spoken and insightful young women, Kang was somewhat timid, but carried herself with confidence in the movie. "Every moment was special for me. When I am acting with others, we share a part of our lives together. We heard each other's stories everyday, and how everyone lives their lives, and I learned more about film", Kang said.

Acting with Choi Min-sik is a career-launching opportunity for many actors. Kang who eagerly rose to the challenge, admiringly described her famous co-star. "He is very sexy. I thought he was very sexy in the fighting scene of the film. When he is in character, he acts with such truth. When I interact with him in my role, I feel like we are being real. Between actors, technique isn't the most important thing. The most important thing is the synergy of minds and the reality that is transposed".

She has since developed a close friendship with Choi, whom she considers a positive role model in her life. As a restless youth, he is one of the few persons she listens to. "I rode a scooter, and he told me not to ride it, because it's dangerous. He threatened never see me again in the future, so I stopped", Kang said.

Kang debuted in the film "Nabi" in 2000 and has since become passionate about film acting. Her technique is influenced by everyone around her, through real interaction.

Kang now enjoys her celebrity status and the satisfaction of acting in a successful film. "If I weren't happy with the movie, I wouldn't be doing this interview", she continued, smiling. "I recently bought two roasted chickens at a corner shop, and the owner offered them to me as a gift, knowing who I am. That was really nice".
