Tarantino Compliments Korean Movie 'Oldboy'

Director Quentin Tarantino, who is also head judge for this year's Cannes film festival, paid special compliments to Director Park Chan-wook's "Oldboy".
Tarantino, during a interview with the movie magazine "Variety", in recent days said that it's about time that Park was at the Cannes festival. He said Park would be one of the most exciting action cinema directors in Cannes. Tarantino said that he has heard from nine different people who have seen the movie "Oldboy" and heard it's more of a gritty film than a commercial film.

Last year, "Oldboy" was selected as one of the top ten films of the year by a famous U.S. Internet website called "Ain't It Cool" (www.aintitcool.com). Sources said Tarantino has special affection for "Oldboy".

In the beginning, "Oldboy" was invited to show under the "non-competing" category; instead it was invited to Cannes under the competing category.

Tarantino said that he would not say a word about the movie selections and only said that the head judge dictates somewhat the aesthetic used by the panel. In his case, Tarantino said that his aesthetic would be "cinema first" aesthetics.
