As MBC drama 'Dae Jang Geum'-associated programs hold a high rank in an audience rating ranking in Hong Kong, this Korean drama is sweeping over Hong Kong TV dramas.

'Dae Jang Geum'-related programs which were aired in Hong Kong with a title, "Jewel In the Palace", ranked first-third in May monthly chart there, according to AGB Niesen Media Research, a program rating survey institution.

AGB Niesen Media Research said that drama 'Dae Jang Geum' took the first place with 47.2% in terms of individual audience rating, followed by public entertainments program 'Daejanggeum Special' with 43.8% (the second place) and 'Daejanggeum prologue with 38.4%(the third place).

Such an audience rating is high than a popularity rating posted in Korea. Korean drama 'Daeganggeum' ended last month in Hong Kong gained a tremendous popularity so as to be reported concerning every movement of the leading actors such as Lee Young-ae, Ji Jin-hee and so on.

The show fascinated Hong Kong with its chopstick and food culture, oriental medicine, filial duty and power struggle in the palace -- none of it unfamiliar to the island's people.

The TV miniseries Daejanggeum, or Jewel in the Palace, which aired on MBC from September 15, 2003 to March 23, 2004, set many new records. The miniseries, whose viewer rate averaged 47%, and even reached a high of 57.8%, is based on the story of a real historical figure (Jang-geum) who was the first and only woman to serve as head physician to the King in the rigidly hierarchical and male-dominated social structure of the Joseon Dynasty.

Daejanggeum, in English, "the Great Jang-geum", caught the attention of Korean TV viewers with its unique combination of two themes: the successful rise of a female, which is rarely covered in historical genre, and the elements of traditional food and medicine.
