A Month for Movie Fans

August will be a month for movie fans, with well-made Korean films of various hues dominating the big screen. Two weeks after its debut, Park Chan-wook's "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance" remains unstoppable, attracting 2.1 million filmgoers as of Wednesday. This weekend the lady appears on about 420 screens, 50 more than in the first week as the grim tale brought a turnaround for the movie theater business.

"Welcome to Dongmakgol", which debuted on Thursday, has secured no fewer than 450 screens for this weekend. Combined with "Lady Vengeance" that makes 870 screens, 56 percent of Korea's 1,567.

On August 11 it's showtime for Cha Seung-won's "48 Hour Live Broadcast" - " The Big Scene". Unveiled to the press just a few days ago, the film brims with the virtues that make a great mass-audience thriller, chock-full of mystery, suspense and excitement and with a plot that moves along at a cracking pace. It will be shown on some 300 screens nationwide.

The market share of Korean films in July was 28.2 percent (IM Pictures statistics), the lowest it has been in six months. But that lull should now be over. More important than numbers, however, is the fact that moviegoers will be able to take in visually and dramatically top-notch Korean films.
