"Renart the Fox" is the opening film for Seoul International Cartoon and Animation Festival
Asia's biggest annual cartoon and animation event will take place in Seoul on Aug. 11-16 with attractions for ordinary visitors and key players in the industry.

The 9th Seoul International Cartoon and Animation Festival (SICAF) will be held at various venues in the COEX center in Samsong-dong, southern Seoul for six days.

The festival will present a variety of acclaimed domestic and international cartoons, and hold exhibitions and various other events. It will also strengthen its industrial marketing plan, the SICAF Promotion Plan (SPP).

"Local cartoons have won increasing acclaim internationally for their high quality over the past ten years", said Lee Chun-man, president of the executive committee of SICAF, during a news conference on July 12 at the Seoul Animation Center. "But the reality is, frankly, that the local industry has still been in a difficult situation despite its potential".

The local industry has accumulated techniques and skills from the work of original equipment manufacture (OEM), working for international animation production companies for a long time, and it's time to facilitate them properly, Lee said, emphasizing the importance of the SPP. The trade fair will hold conferences and set up promotional booths on Aug. 11- 13 at the COEX Conference Center.

However, Lee added that they will not neglect their duty to hold a festive event for fans of animation and cartoons as SICAF has grown into Asia's biggest animation festival as well as a unique summer festival in the city.

After the Seoul metropolitan government began sponsoring the festival in 2003, its size and scope have drastically increased and last year's festival attracted about half of a million people.

Opening with "Renart the Fox" by director Thierry Schiel, the film festival will be held at Megabox theaters in the COEX center and Seoul Anicinema in Yejang-dong, showing about 300 short and feature animated films from some 40 countries in its six main sections.

Based on a famous French fable, "Renart the Fox" is an adventure story rendered in the mixture of two and three-dimensional graphics.

In the main competition sections _ Feature Film, Short Film, TV and Commissioned Film and Internet Film, a total of 88 short and feature animations will be shown, which were selected from among 846 submissions from 77 countries.

In the section of 50 Years of Korean Animation History, many classic cartoons will be shown for those who have a hankering for the past.

Many of the presentations will be screened either in English or with both English and Korean subtitles, and cartoons in the Internet film category will be available for viewing through SICAF's Web site during the festival period.

In addition, visitors can also see a range of cartoon and animation characters in seven zones of the exhibition at the COEX Pacific Hall.

The section of 60 Years of Korean Animation History also collects a range of works to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the nation's liberation from Japanese colonial rule, and the "special zone" displays works whose main theme is the restoration of Chonggyechon stream in Seoul.

Other events include outdoor screenings, exhibitions and animation song contests at the Seoul Plaza in front of Seoul City Hall on Aug. 12 and 13.
