CJ Entertainment appoints its first female CEO

Last week, Katherine KIM was appointed the new CEO of CJ Entertainment. She is the first female CEO of the company and will replace outgoing CEO KIM Joo-sung who will go on to head CJ's cable television company CJ Media. KIM comes with a range of international experiences sought after by the Korean film industry after starting at CJ in 2005 coordinating its US/Korean co productions. In addition to this substantial role she also oversaw the marketing and distribution of Dreamworks and Paramount Film releases.

These days, the importance of international co productions in terms of increasing funds in Korea's tightly squeezed film industry is rising. One such international co production overseen by Kim was the U.S/Korea film August Rush directed by Kirsten Sheridan. Although it did poorly in the U.S, when the film was released here late October 2007 it took in $2,000,000 on its opening weekend. Although this might not be the best result for a co production looking to penetrate the U.S market it does give Katherine KIM direct experience to direct CJ into international waters.

Katherine KIM therefore, given her direct experience working with foreign film companies in the international arena gives her invaluable experience for the company looking to expand its funding options. For the Korean film industry as a whole, given its international ambitions, the appointment of Katherine KIM comes with high expectations.
