Court Upholds Ban on Plastic Surgeon in Singer's Death

The Seoul Administrative Court on Friday upheld a decision by the Ministry of Health and Welfare to ban a plastic surgeon held responsible for singer Sin Hae-cheol's death after a botched stomach stapling.

Kang Se-hoon, who is also implicated in the death of an Australian national, had sued the government over the decision.

Kang stapled the singer's stomach in October 2014. The operation failed and Sin complained of abdominal pain. Kang was charged with conducting additional stomach surgery without Sin's consent during which he accidentally punctured Sin's small intestine and pericardium, causing the peritonitis and blood poisoning that killed him.

But Kang simply dodged the negative publicity by opening a new clinic and continued to perform abdominal surgery. In November last year, he stapled the stomach of an Australian patient who died 40 days later.

The health ministry last month banned Kang from performing weight-loss operations.

The court rejected Kang's argument that the ban had caused him irreparable financial damage.
