Culture and Tourism Minister Wants SNU to Teach Theater and Film

Culture and Tourism Minister Kim Myong-gon said in an interview with the SNU Alumni Association that there should be a department of theater and film at Seoul National University.

"Art and culture should be taught professionally. Theater and film do not necessarily represent art, but they are a big part of it, and thus I think SNU should have a relevant department", Kim said. "When it comes to art and culture, SNU does not teach practical skills as much as other universities. Although some who acted in theater in the school's drama club in the past are now leading the field as prominent producers and professors, I am sorry to think that if they had studied it seriously, they would now play an even bigger role".

When asked how he has been doing since he was appointed culture and tourism minister some two months ago, he said that he is having hard time managing the areas of culture, art, tourism and sports in a coordinated and balanced manner.

"I am well aware that I cannot develop quality polices and successfully implement them by simply working at my desk without meeting and listening to the public", he said. "Therefore, I will try my best to collect various opinions and reflect them when establishing policies".

The minister also shared his desire to improve relations with the press. He said that he will flexibly apply the government's principle that it will embrace reasonable criticism from the press but actively respond to incorrect reports. "I will not only use the press as an active medium for promoting the government's policies with the public, but also try to maintain a good relationship with reporters and accept their sound criticism with humility", he added.
