"Dae Jang Geum" in Blow to Hong Kong Restaurants

In further proof that every silver lining has a cloud, Hong Kong restaurants reported an alarming drop in business during the times when the Korean soap "Dae Jang Geum" was shown.

Hong Kong media reported Friday sales of Hong Kong restaurants decreased by 40 percent when "Dae Jang Geum" aired. Broadcast until early this month, the soap marked a culmination of the Korean Wave in Hong Kong by attracting viewing figures of 47 percent, the highest ever for a soap in the island.

Since the tale of palace intrigue in the Chosun era was televised at dinner time, people settled for a TV dinner at home rather than go out to eat, the Hong Kong press said. "Hong Kong restaurants did not do so well during the time 'The Great Janggeum' was aired", the president of the Association of Hong Kong Restaurants said. "Customers agonized over whether to eat out or at home".
