Export of KBS Content on Dramatic Increase This Year

The export of KBS content has been on a dramatic increase this year.

KBS Media, an affiliate of KBS in charge of the export of KBS content, has tallied the total export volume of KBS content at 24 million dollars (about 24.2 billion won) for the period between January and September this year. This amount is more than double the export volume recorded during the same period last year (about 11.9 billion won).

An official from KBS Media said on Oct. 27, "During the same period this year, it is confirmed that MBC exported content worth 21.8 billion won and SBS recorded an export volume of 19.3 billion won. KBS will receive the 'Export Record Trophy of $20 Million' this year for the first time as a broadcasting network. 'Export Record Trophies' are awarded based on export records for the period between July of the previous year and June of the current year".

Half of the volume of KBS's exports ended up going to Japan. KBS Media earned 17 billion won in profits because of exports to Japan during the January-September period this year.

The "DVD on actor Bae Yong-joon" topped two different charts--KBS Media's total exports overseas (including exports to Japan) and its exports to Japan, netting nearly 5 billion won in sales and emerging as the top export item. The "Best Five Export Items" for both exports overseas and exports to Japan include the hit KBS dramas "Winter Sonata", " Oh! Pil-seung, Bong Soon-Young" "Summer Scent", and "Emperor of The Sea".

"We are selling a variety of KBS's content overseas, including documentaries and animations, in addition to the sale of rights to dramas. We are determined to record a yearly volume of 100 million dollars in broadcasting content exports by developing derivative products such as action figures, publications, CDs and games", said an official from KBS Media.
