The 28th Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFAN, Festival Director Shin Chul), which announced a new AI film section on May 13th, is now attracting significant attention from the media and the film industry for selecting Son Ye-jin as the focus of this year's actress retrospective.

Actress Son Ye-jin, who has captivated the public with her unique aura and charm in various roles spanning different genres, has been selected for the actress retrospective of the 28th Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival. Since 2017, BIFAN has been showcasing the oeuvre of leading actresses and actors in contemporary Korean cinema in retrospectives. Following Jeon Do-yeon, Jung Woo-sung, Kim Hye-soo, Sol Kyung-gu, and Choi Min-sik, this year's retrospective is dedicated to none other than Son Ye-jin. The retrospective titled "One and Only Son Ye-jin" symbolizing her brilliance, will focus on Son's 23 years of acting. It will include screenings of some of her representative films, the publication of a booklet commemorating actors, a mega talk session, and a photo exhibition. What's more, Son Ye-jin, who has been in the spotlight for her stunning dresses on every red carpet, is expected to shine splendidly on the red carpet of this year's BIFAN.

Son Ye-jin has emerged as one of Korea's top actresses, seamlessly transitioning between cinema and television. She has become one of Korea's leading actresses, expanding her range as an actress, captivating audiences with her performances. Through her portrayal of innocent and pure characters such as Sim Soo-in who is torn between love and friendship in "Lover's Concerto" (2002), or displaying a cheerful yet tragic love as as Ji-hye and Joo-hee in "The Classic" (2003), or as Soo-jin embracing a sad love with her whole being while losing her memory in "A Moment to Remember" (2004), she became an icon of first love for the audience. What's more, she established herself as an irreplaceable actress in Korean cinema with roles such as the experienced flirter Han Ji-won in "The Art of Seduction" (2005), the eccentric Joo In-ah married to two husbands in "My Wife Got Married" (2008), Yeo-ri in "Spellbound" (2011), a horror romance unseen before, and Yeo-wol, a spirited pirate in "Pirates" (2014). As hysterical Yeon-hong, driven to madness and rage in "The Truth Beneath" (2016), she introduced a new role of hers to the audience. In "The Last Princess" (2016) she displayed deep emotions with her graceful portrayal of the anguish and grief of a princess who has lost her country.

Actress Son Ye-jin, who has built her own unique character across various genres, is also a spectacular award winner. She has won more than 50 awards, including the Prime Minister's Commendation at the 9th Korean Popular Culture and Arts Awards, three Grand Bell Awards (2003, 2014, 2016), six Baeksang Arts Awards (2003, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2017, 2020), five Blue Dragon Film Awards (2003, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2016), and two Korean Association of Film Critics Awards (2002, 2016). Internationally, she has been recognized for her acting skills and has established herself as the unrivaled actress representing Korea in both name and reality. She received the Best Actress Award at the 51st Asia-Pacific Film Festival for her performance in "April Snow" (2005), and the Best Actress Award at the 15th China Golden Rooster and Hundred Flowers Film Festival for her performance in "A Moment to Remember" (2004), among others. Recently, she has confirmed to star in Park Chan-wook's new film "The Ax", raising expectations for the collaboration between top-notch director and top-notch actress.

BIFAN programmer MO Eunyoung explained the reasons behind this year's selection as follows: "Actress Son Ye-jin is a representative actor of the 21st century with unrivaled charm who broke away from stereotypes and built her own character, covering all genres throughout cinema and TV". The 28th Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival, which selected Son Ye-jin for the actress retrospective, will be held from July 4 to 14 in Bucheon City.
