""Vegetarian", a Surreal South Korean Novel"

Han Kang's "Vegetarian" sounds like a compelling and fascinating read. The film adaptation was one of the most psychologically disturbing films I've seen from South Korea (which is saying a lot), but I wonder if the book (as is most often the case) better than the book. "I was thinking about the spectrum of human behavior, from sublimity to horror, and wondered, is it really possible for humans to live a perfectly innocent life in this violent world, and what would happen if someone tried to achieve that?" said Kang.

Did you know that Shin Sang-ok and Choi Eun-hee ("the golden couple of South Korean cinema in the 1960s") were kidnapped in the 70s and taken to North Korea to make films? How bizarre, but the truth is all too often stranger than fiction: "They were allowed to travel to Europe to attend film festivals and managed a daring escape in 1989 while in Vienna to sign a movie deal, and sought asylum in the United States".
