South Korea's Defense Minister Song Young-moo is hoping to affect some serious change within his ranks by cracking down on dehumanizing practices and boosting morale. In a recent talk to new recruits in Paju, Song said he will "establish a military where you are valued and [can] serve with pride". The comments come after a general reportedly mistreated soldiers.

More young Koreans are feeling bleak about their future and are moving away from the country's collective side of life in favour of the so-called "YOLO" (You Only Live Once) lifestyle. The rise of 'single services' (e.g. bars, restaurants, and solo travelling is also becoming more popular too) attests to a shifting zeitgeist, spurred in part by the pressures of the country's hyper competitive culture. "Businesses are seeing increased profits as more and more young people spend their disposable income breaking free from the herd and living the lives they only live once to the fullest".
