Yunchul Kim, a South Korean artist, "uses scientific methods to create dynamic art pieces with photonic crystals and other strangely beautiful materials" that swirl, bubble and pop. Kim is among a growing number of artists who are using science to create inspiring works of art that play on the borderlands between these two, often separated disciplines. Last year, Kim was awarded CERN's COLLIDE International Award for his work, and he's had his creations featured in galleries around Europe as well as his home country. "My work is very complex to produce, but it is very easy to view", says Kim.

As part of the 'Korea-Arab Friendship Caravan' that is currently touring in Egypt, a Korean b-boy crew and sand artist created a unique 20-minute spectacle that blurred the lines between these two very distinct art forms. In an interview with Ahram Online, Kim Ha Jun, the sand artists, told reporters that he "wanted to express the strong relation between nature and human life and that nature is greater in concept than humans, therefore their relation together is important". "80-year-old architect, photographer rediscovered"

Two 80-year old South Korean artists-Yoon Seung-joong, the architect who "laid the groundwork for modern architecture in Korea", and Han Chung-Shik, a photographer who "expanded the aesthetic categories of Korean photography to formalism"-were recently celebrated at Korea's National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Gwacheon (MMCA). Through their works, these two influential artists helped to shape the face of modern Korea's vibrant cityscape and art scene. "Times change", said Yoon, "and the architect should look further with a future-oriented perspective, rather than being about the present".

South Korean artist Ran Hwang saw the attack on the World Trade Centre in 2001 and was struck by the fragility of life. "From that point", Hwang said, "my thoughts deepened around life and death, creation and demolition". Hwang, 57, sees that "death is a part of life" and that eventually, all things must pass.
