The 2018 Winter Games in PyeongChang recently came to an end, concluding with a "rousing, rocking closing ceremony". The ceremony was an innovative affair and did not shy from tapping into the country's energetic pop culture: "The DJs cranking loud music included Raiden (not the Mortal Kombat character), and Martin Garrix, the Dutch superstar of the scene. The athletes streamed out of the stands onto the floor and many of them danced. The American skiing superstar Lindsey Vonn led a conga line". "Winners of the 2017 International Photographer of the Year Contest Will Make You Feel Things"

The 2017 International Photographer of the Year contest garnered over 4,000 submissions. Here you can enjoy some of the winning images, including Argus Paul Estabrook's "Losing Face" taken in South Korea. Argus won first place in the photojournalism/story category for amateurs with her picture of South Koreans protesting the actions of their 11th President, Park Geun-hye after her dubious political dealings were revealed. "In South Korean society, losing face is the worst thing that can happen to a person. The damage of having one's identity lost to shame is so ruinous, that it can completely destroy a person's social standing and authority".

"[Photo News] K-pop infuses harmony into traditional music on gala exhibition"

Did you know that after the closing ceremony at the Winter Games there was a special figure skating exhibition gala? According to the Korea Herald, the event, which was held at the Gangneung Ice Arena, included such figures as Min Yu-ra, Alexandre Gamelin, Cha Jun-hwan, Choi Da-bin, Kim Kyu-eun and Alex Kam. Interestingly, the music for their performances combined traditional Korean music with contemporary K-pop. "Max Desfor, 104, War Photographer at Midcentury, Is Dead"

Max Desfor was an award-winning war photographer whose coverage of the Korean War earned him recognition from the Pulitzer board. "Mr. Desfor volunteered to cover the Korean War for the news service when the North invaded the South in June 1950. He parachuted into North Korea with United States troops and retreated with them after forces from the North, joined by the Chinese, pushed south". The New York Times reflects on the life and work of Mr Desfor who recently passed away at his home in Silver Spring at the age of 104.
