[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Black" Episode 10

"Black" feels like a fine day at the beach, right before the wind picks up and you feel your pretty hat flying away and the sand smacking you in the eyes. It is a wild ride and it sometimes feels exhausting, but it is fun. Everything fits when you dig deep enough. Gwang-gyeon comes closer to Moo-gang's secrets while Black is about to get a revelation of his own about the true identities of Reapers. Hopefully this will not break him.

The timeline of Clara (Cha Chung-hwa) and Gwang-gyeon's (Kim Won-hae) involvement is clearer now, which makes me wonder how much he knew about her work. This would potentially hint to the reason why Moo-gang (Song Seung-heon) attached himself to the detective and lied to him. Leo's (Kim Jae-young) identity is still a mystery, but if he is not related to our Moojin killer (Woo Hyun), he is related to Senator Nam Joong-pyo.

This has been a recurring name and the biggest candidate for our mystery Watch Man, although I wonder why his face is hidden if this is the case. Perhaps we will meet him as a senator before we see him as the villain, unless I am not remembering a past encounter. I have to assume our Big Bad is involved in the supernatural, because I doubt this universe's deity would allow the mess currently happening if not for damage control of something far worse.

Speaking of Reaper secrets, we now know that our hero is Joon (Lee Hyo-je), but Joon's car accident story seems suspicious. I thought that 444 (Kim Tae-woo) wearing gloves could somehow be significant, even though Reapers retaining physical changes would leave Clara's Reaper form unexplained. Both of our missing boys have hand injuries, too. However, I expect the twist that Seung-cheol (Lee Joon-seo) was a stand-in body for Joon, whose missing heart would raise suspicions. Seung-cheol died as Joon, Joon is in the ocean, Moo-gang had his heart.

Now that we have rules on how Reaper "retirement" works, I have questions. The important one would be, If a visual change happens upon a body's discovery, why did 444 (Kim Tae-woo) never find out before? He should have witnessed it or heard about it during his twenty-year "career", even if his partner, Clara, was designated her biological form. I enjoy the crime aspect of "Black", but I hope we get explanations on the supernatural.

Development-wise, I am glad to see more for Man-soo (Kim Dong-jun) as well, but as sweet and as tragic as he may be, he is an oddly detached link here. Even if his family is related, Man-soo does not have the same function in the story that Ha-ram (Go Ara), Black and Soo-wan (Lee El) do. He helps around, sure, but I hope to see him used in a way more directly related to the big case soon.

"Black" is directed by Kim Hong-seon-I, written by Choi Ran-I and features Song Seung-heon, Go Ara, Lee El and Kim Dong-jun.
