[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Blade Man" Episode 6

It's time for Hong-bin to actively pursue the mystery behind his blackouts and it's about time. If the strange transformations went unexplained very much longer it would have damaged the strength of the plot. Luckily, Hong-bin is intelligent and his secretary is bad at keeping secrets.

Hong-bin's horrified reaction to discovering that he transforms when he's angry is quite understandable. As he delves into his memories, he finds strange coincidences that lead him to question Secretary Go to find answers. His relationship with Go is not only a business relationship, but one that provides most of the comedy in the show. Han Jung-soo excels at comedy. He has excellent comedic timing and gives himself to the moment. When paired with him, Lee Dong-wook becomes quite the comedian himself.

Madame Yoon has stepped up her game and has begun to manipulate Se-dong and her relationship with Hong-bin. Luckily for the naive Se-dong, Hong-bin's little brother Hong-joo warns her of Yoon's mechanizations and gives the show a little variety. It has settled into a rather bland pattern of Se-dong's "wow" exclamations and Hong-bin's perpetual anger. Hong-joo is a cheeky teenager who serves not only as a humorous partial exposition fairy, but also as an insight into Hong-bin's family.

The part of the Hong-bin's family I am having trouble with is Chang. He was so prominent in the first few episodes and now is more of an ornament than anything else. Hong-bin has had very little interaction with him, and all of that interaction was instigated by Hong-bin's obsession with Chang's mother. In fact, he is so obsessed that it runs his life. He sees Chang as Tae-hee's son - not as his son. It is a view that must change for him to grow and to be able to foster a relationship with his son. This is the kind of relationship that can give a show depth if it starts to stagnate like "Blade Man" is now.

Some interesting developments cropped up regarding Hong-bin's father and Madame Yoon. While Hong-bin becomes more suspicious of his father, I become more supicious of Madam Yoon who Hong-joo wanred Se-dong against. His father's involvement in Tae-hee's life and death are not what he thinks they are. Madam Yoon has too much stake in their family to let Hong-bin reconcile with his father. His father needs more development to flesh out this part of the plot, and hopefully it will come.

There is some company drama, but it hasn't had much screen time. It could be interesting, especially since Se-dong is a gifted game developer and her team is a close-knit group. It focuses mostly on the dating rumors about Se-dong and Hong-bin while I wish it would focus on Se-dong's creative efforts with her team and on Hong-bin's ability as a business owner. So far he seems mostly like a tantrum throwing toddler with nice suits and a propensity for looking like a human thornbush when it rains.
