[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Blood" Episode 19

I'm not sure there's really much left to say about "Blood" at this point. The drama has overstayed its welcome- I mean that literally more than subjectively. Take away all the filler and there's maybe about ten episodes worth of actual interesting plot here. But even the filler could have been potentially interesting if it actually led up to something. Again, I would have cared a lot more about Seok-joo's depth if we'd ever gotten any meaningful detail about his relationship with Ri-ta. Instead, it was just his continuing to get involved in Jae-wook's obviously bad research idea.

Even writer Park Jae-beom-I seems to have given up on trying to have any of the drama's plot points lead into each other. The cliffhanger is another death which honestly just felt kind of spiteful. I mean, sure, this was one of the few somewhat likable characters in the drama, but what point was this supposed to serve? The bad guys have had numerous opportunities to do this, so why drop this particular bomb now except, well, the drama's almost over I guess?

It's not even a crisis situation or anything. There's always been this odd overhanging assumption in "Blood" that vampires can go anywhere they want and do whatever they want with no apparent consequences. I'm struggling to remember why Ri-ta even moved back into her apartment in the first place given that the general overhanging sense of danger never actually faded. As far as I can tell the purpose was just so the script can put her in danger again, causing more misdirection.

Not that any of this really matters. As the cliffhanger demonstrates, Jae-wook is presumably going to get taken down by the police one way or another. How this hasn't happened already is another mystery. At some point people are going to get court orders demanding that theys see their loved ones, and also that their loved ones get taken off of their psychopath medication. That would be the sensible thing to do anyway.

But then nothing about "Blood" has ever really been sensible. This is a drama about vampire administrators, who work in a hospital, argue about dangerous research, and occasionally get violent for no particularly good reason. Somehow "Blood" has managed to attract a small dedicated fanbase- and you know, good on you for liking this drama. I'm glad someone somewhere is able to wrangle some joy out of this. As for me, I'm just tired. I'll be relieved to see this story finally shove off.
