[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Master - God of Noodles" Episode 3

Gil-do has clearly never been worried about the idiom of burning bridges, because he is walking around waving fire at everything and everyone. His sadistic nature reaches new lows every time he acts or speaks. Episode three introduces new character connections and things get very dire for our hero, as his friends get caught up in his mess. The road to a complicated future stretches before us. Time for tangling some noodles.

Gil-do (Cho Jae-hyun) has been largely presented as a genius manipulator until now, but the thing about getting high on power is that it makes one sloppy. The man makes enemies out of the people close to him and it will eventually be his downfall. Go Kang-sook (Lee Il-hwa), Gil-do's wife seems to know that well and she is able to play him with it. On the other hand, Hwang Seong-rok (Kim Joo-wan) is his slave and their incredibly tense car scene makes that point clear.

As far as our new connections go, I cannot help but detect a whiff of makjang in the air, as Tae-ha (Lee Sang-yeob) and Da-hae (Gong Seung-yeon) seem to share a history and possibly blood. The slow-motion meeting focused on her and Myeong (Chun Jung-myung) reveals a possible blood line too. After all, they are both unique culinary geniuses. That said, tying the side-characters into the story is necessary.

Up until now they felt very disconnected from Myeong and his revenge. Do-kkoo (Jo Hee-bong) might turn into an ally one day and this makes him more interesting. One element which worried me for a bit was Yeo-gyeong's (Jung Yoo-mi) attempted rape scene. This is a big subject to handle and it is often used in very wrong ways in fiction. I feel it is handled acceptably here, but I hope she does not end up a tool for Myeong's angst.

I am happy to see some other things addressed, even if clumsily. The honking I had an issue with in the last episode is nowhere to be found and while it creates a continuity error, there is more sense to it being gone. I can look past the orphanage director's convenient memory loss at this point as well, since this part of the story is almost done.

This is not yet set in our present and a time jump is coming. I thought Myeong's friends would just be around him, but now they have their own reasons to be involved with his persons of interest. This is a fine episode and I will be happy as long as we do not dive into makjang land. You are better than that, "Master - God of Noodles".

"Master - God of Noodles" is directed by Kim Jong-yeon and Lim Se-joon, written by Chae Seung-dae and features Chun Jung-myung, Cho Jae-hyun, Jung Yoo-mi and Lee Sang-yeob.
