[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Shopping King Louis" Episode 6

Our adorable duo get to spend some time apart and re-evaluate their relationship when Joong-won steps in and kicks the romantic shenanigans up a notch. Ma-ri steps up her antagonist game, but the people looking for Louis/Ji-seong will not rest either. Meanwhile, Bok-sil discovers some valuable information about Bok-nam and detective Nam makes progress in finding Ji-seong's roots. A dangerous figure stalks our couple's home, causing a suspenseful event.

The series has not been using its love triangle and possible love square a lot, but Ji-seong's (Seo In-guk) temporary move pushes that bit forward. More importantly, it reveals a lot about the characters. Joong-won (Yoon Sang-hyun) gets to witness the tenacity and honesty in Ji-seong through his work while Ji-seong and Bok-sil (Nam Ji-hyun) realize how much they miss each other. Seeing Ji-seong go back to his old ways is a nice touch, because it emphasizes how hard he tries to be decent for Bok-sil.

Ma-ri (Lim Se-mi) does not have a big place in the romantic happenings at the moment and I frankly wish it will remain this way. Her character is a clear antagonist and seems to only function as a plot device. As regrettable as this is, she does get a promotion in villainry by working with her father. It brings her out of the neutral and lacking in focus territory she has been in for most of the series so far.

The discoveries of Ji-seong's memory and Bok-nam's (Ryoo Ui-hyun) whereabouts have been teased for a while, as the series takes its time with them. Il-soon (Kim Young-ok) and Ho-joon's (Eom Hyo-seon) temporary set back in finding Ji-seong due to Bok-sil's ownership of the account will probably not last long. Adding to that detecitive Nam (Kang Ji-sub) making progress and Bok-sil having an idea of the people Bok-nam hung out with and both subplots are moving forward rather nicely.

"Shopping King Louis" is not a very story-heavy series, obviously. Nothing major happens, misunderstandings are solved quickly and conflicts develop characters more than drama. I feel this is a good thing to have from time to time and a romantic comedy is a good place for it. We get to see two lovely people live and fall in love, we see them mature and see the people around them change through their relationships.

That being said, I do wonder where the series will go from here. With just six episodes behind us, there is plenty of time to fill. The series does use some cliche elements for suspense, the car accident and now hammer incident being such, but I believe and hope it will maintain its almost slice-of-life style, which is what makes it such a warm and entertaining series.

"Shopping King Louis" is directed by Lee Sang-yeob-I, written by Oh Ji-yeong-I and features Seo In-guk, Nam Ji-yeon, Yoon Sang-hyun and Lim Se-mi.
