[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Strong Woman Do Bong-soon" Episode 15

The events of "Strong Woman Do Bong-soon" climax in the penultimate episode, sticking the sadistic Jang-hyeon behind bars where he belongs and showing off that Bong-soon is made of greater stuffs than she first believed. Along with the positives, there were a few negatives, mainly in how the show arrived at this point. Those negatives are offset by the ridiculous cute chemistry between Bong-soon and Min-hyeok.

It is that very chemistry that has carried this show from start to finish. Each moment the main couple spends together is delightful and keeps this rather light-hearted crime rom-com from sinking. Despite my quibbles, I really have enjoyed my time with Bong-soon and her story. Let's get a few quibbles out of the way first. Firstly, why did Bong-soon allow so much time to pass before she suggested nabbing Jang-hyeon? Her pursuit of this psychopath always seemed lukewarm despite the fact that she was directly threatened and her friend was kidnapped. That lack of urgency detracted from the procedural aspect of the drama as well as from her growth as a super hero type. Focus on the romance in this case detracted from the time that could've been used to develop Bong-soon as a heroine. Proof of this is when Bong-soon, Min-hyeok, and Gook-doo finally apprehend Jang-hyeon. The scene spent most of the time following Gook-doo rather than on Bong-soon's final capture, which felt anticlimactic. While I'm glad she had a team to work with, the entire sequence felt anticlimactic.

Regarding the Bong-soon/Min-hyeok couple, I'm assuming they finally consummated their relationship although, in true K-drama fashion, a solid confirmation is never given. The aftermath of their night together is definitely a load of flirtation, haphazard scenes full of bouts of jealousy and making up, and other evidence of a relationship fully entered into the giggly romantic stage. This reviewer chooses to believe they spent a romantic night together because they're two adults who are in love. As for the third wheel, Gook-doo, he comes to terms with the fact that he lost the girl and that she is in a happy, healthy relationship. It doesn't stop him from tiffing with Min-hyeok, but I believe it's more for entertainment value than anything else.

A few of the other contentions finally are addressed. Bong-soon's father finally runs away from his abusive relationship and her mother is extremely put out. The woman has a hard time hearing about her role in this event, but hopefully she'll come around. The silly leader of the gang still can't seem to believe the weird-o monk bamboozled him - it'll happen. And, the toothless gangster and his flamboyant game designer doppelganger finally meet...and nothing really happens. I really hope a cap is put on that because that situation was full of comedic potential that was never really tapped into.

"Strong Woman Do Bong-soon" has almost come to an end and our hoodie-wearing, badass little lady with strength like Hercules has completed her revenge, made her neighborhood safe, and found happiness in love. There are a few loose ends to tie up, and with a drama like this, I'm pretty sure they'll be neatly bow-tied. Without further ado, onto the last episode!
