[HanCinema's Film Review] Korean Weekend Box Office 2012.10.26 ~ 2012.10.28

HanCinema's Korean Box Office Review

(2012.10.26 ~ 2012.10.28)

After six weeks as Korea's number one film and nearly eleven million admissions,  Choo Chang-min's "Masquerade" is finally overthrown by Britian's favourite secret agent. "Skyfall" is 007's latest adventure that sees Daniel Craig star along side Helen McCrory and Javier Bardem as Bond's loyalties are put the test as M16 comes under attack. The film opened in Korea this past weekend and claimed 871,819 (45.6%) admissions with the help of some 749 screens around the country.

"Masquerade" managed to add another 412,773 in its seventh week in the chart. The film has almost done the impossible as now challenges the record-breaking 12,982,353 admissions that was set earlier this year by "The Thieves". These are incredible numbers, but will Choo's smash hit be able to acquire another 2 million admissions? It's a close call, but either way its current 10,944,759 is nothing to sneer at, and its a great sign for the Korean film industry to be able to have not one, but two such runaway successes this year. In third is "Suspect X" which is down one place with 325,260 (16.8%), Pang Eun-jin's thriller was allocated 436 screens and after two weeks out has collected a total of 1,233,650 admissions. At number four is "Iron Dae-oh: The Nation's Iron Bag!" starring Kim In-kwon and Yoo Da-in. The film is based on a true incident in 1985 when there was a sit-in protest by university activists at the U.S. Cultural Center; in the film a Chinese delivery man falls in love and get caught up in the protest to win her over.

"Brave" remains unmoved at number five with 42,087 (1.9%) and is followed by Lim Sang-yoon's "A Company Man" which fell three places to settle at this week's number six. Lim's directorial piece has not been able to capture the publics interests are much as he might have hoped, as it has just broken the million admissions mark (1,091,602). Lim's debut feature added just 40,648 (2.2%) to its cause with the help of 261 screens around the country. At number seven is the U.S action thriller "Looper" with 36,434. This sci-fi action piece stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis and Emily Blunt, but has not managed to impress Korean audiences as it slipped three places from its entry position of four last weekend.

"Paranormal Activity 4" makes an appearance in this week's top ten with 34,192 (1.7%) admissions to its name. That was followed by the Korean thriller/mystery film "Cold City" (aka "Intact City" or "Cruel City"). "Cold City" was selected for the long film section by the Jeonju Film Commission but only managed to cement 10,603 in its first weekend out. Fin,lly the list is rounded out by the fall of Heo Jin-ho's "Dangerous Liaisons" which has. over the past three weeks, has steadily moved down the list. "Dangerous Liaisons" added just 5,998 admissions, putting the film on a total admissions count of 293,263 since its release on the 11th October.
