[HanCinema's News] Lee Do-hyun Talks About "The Good Bad Mother"

In a recent interview conducted on June 13th, Lee Do-hyun claimed to have cried when he saw the final flourish of "The Good Bad Mother" on television this past June 8th, with all the characters singing "I Am Happy" by Yoon Hang-ki. Lee Do-hyun claimed to be the type of person who always second-guesses his performances when he sees them on-screen. However, watching "The Good Bad Mother" was a different kind of experience for him.

Lee Do-hyun made his debut in 2017 with a short but memorable role as the younger version of the prison guard played by Jung Kyung-ho. But he has since probably become best known for his role on "The Glory" where he played the love interest and co-conspirator of Song Hye-kyo. Ironically, Lee Do-hyun is now dating Lim Ji-yeon, the villain of "The Glory" with whom we had little screentime. The two only started dating when they met at an acting workshop after filming for "The Glory" was finished.

But Lee Do-hyun had a very different role in "The Good Bad Mother" as a thirty year old prosecutor whose mind regresses to that of an eight year old child following an accident. Despite the gimmicky sounding nature of the role, Lee Do-hyun has earned major plaudits for his performance. In the interview, he discussed experimenting and comparing approaches of a four year old child, an elementary school student, and a middle school student to get his amnesiac tone just right.

Ironically, Lee Do-hyun actually thought the scenes of himself playing an adult prosecutor were the most difficult. This was because while his youthful character is surrounded by his mother and other members of the ensemble, Lee Do-hyun was largely on his own in the courtroom scenes with no one else to play off of. Lee Do-hyun mentioned thinking that he does too much prep work for emotional scenes, and credited leading lady Ra Mi-ran for helping him to break that habit.

Lee Do-hyun described Ra Mi-ran very positively, noting how on set she could easily go from one of her famous tearful scenes to just telling jokes with cast and crew almost immediately once the camera was turned off. For the big apology-on-the-knees scene, a first for Lee Do-hyun, Ra Mi-ran put him at ease by encouraging as more like coming back to the playground after a long absence then as something painful. "The Good Bad Mother" ended on June 8th with ratings of 12.032%.
