HanCinema's Korean Box Office Review

(2013.01.11 ~ 2013.01.13)

Jo Jun-kyoo's "Man on the Edge" has entered the chart sporting tops honours with 796,000 admissions. This is Jo's sixth film since his 2001 debut "My Wife Is a Gangster", and now Jo returns to the comedy-gangster genre and has been welcomed by the Korean public and fans. This meant that last week's number one, Kim Ji-hoon's "The Tower", had to take a step back but in the process still moved passed the 4 million admissions mark. Two new Korean films also entered the top ten, as well as the fantasy epic "Cloud Atlas".

"The Tower" claimed 512,589 to move its total ticket count to 4,454,983, that is about the same number of admissions "Les Misérables" held second down with last weekend. However, Tom Hooper's adaptation only managed 351,264 this weekend around, but that impressively moved its successful run in Korea to almost 5 million admissions since its release on the 19th. At number four is another adaptation in the form "Life of Pie", which united 246,807 fans to its million strong viewership here in Korea.

Entering into the charts at number five in "Cloud Atlas" by Tom Tykwer, and Andy and Lana Wachowski. This epic fantasy contains a number of top Hollywood talents along with Korea's own Bae Doona. She plays a service clone living within a futurist rendition of Seoul, now called "Neo-Seoul". Korean audiences might be interested to see how the film represents Korea's capital and culture into its grand and swooping narrative. "The Reef 2: High Tide" follows with just 128,969 of its own, this underwater animation is helped along with the voice of Kim Byung-man, Nam Bo-ra, and Ryu Dam. The drama "My Little Hero", by director Kim Seong-hoon-III, came next with 85,000 admissions; this one follows a musical director looking for inspiration within a musical he decides takes part in. "My Little Hero" stars Kim Rae-won, Lee Sung-min, Jo An and Lee Kwang-soo.

"Love 911" fell four places to eight with 84,310, but still had a good led on Rich Moore's animation "Wreck-it Ralph" (48,509 admissions) which also fell the same number of places to ninth. The last on the list is Triggerfish Animation's "Zambezia" which moved its total admissions count to just under 500,000 as it rounds out Korea's top ten performers for the week.
