Hyundai's SUVs Outsell Sedans

SUVs are replacing sedans as Hyundai's core models, as it is selling more SUVs than sedans now.

The carmaker said on Monday that its SUV sales at home and overseas amounted to W4.39 trillion in the first quarter of this year, 14 percent higher than its sedan sales of W3.81 trillion (US$1=W1,195).

It is the second consecutive quarter that SUV sales have exceeded those of sedans at Hyundai.

In terms of volume, it sold 184,588 SUVs, compared to 166,210 sedans.

Historically, Hyundai's growth was fueled by popular sedans like the Avante, Sonata and Grandeur, and it faced a crisis in the early 2010s as rising oil prices increased demand for more fuel-efficient SUVs, causing its performance to deteriorate.

Hyundai has worked hard to bolster its SUV lineup for the past couple of years, and industry insiders say that it is now reaping the fruits.
