Jang Dong-gun on His Family's Experience of Division

South Korean star actor Jang Dong-gun talks about his family's experience of Korea's division into South and North on Saturday in an interview with Japan's Asahi TV, the Sankei Sports daily reported Monday.

The program will be broadcast ahead of the Japanese release of Jang's division-themed box-office flop "Typhoon" on April 8. It sees Jang talking for the first time about his family history and his opinions about North Korean refugee issues. He describes how his grandparents, who are from North Korea, fled to South Korea during the Korean War.

"Before shooting the film, I met North Korean defectors, and when I told them what happens in the film they broke down in tears", Jang was quoted as telling the channel "I couldn't act superficially. I shed some 10 kg to portray a character with a burning desire for revenge".

The Sankei Sports praised Jang as an actor "with a fighting spirit". The interviewer, the well-known anchor Etsuko Komiya, told the paper she felt Jang was sincere in his answers to her questions.

Jang was quoted as telling Asahi TV that while the film's theme was serious, it was an action movie viewers would enjoy. The program also includes an interview with the film's director _Kwak_Gyeong-taek.
