Korean American director Mora Mi-ok Stephens won the juror's grand prize at the Florida Film Festival.
The movie "Conventioneers" by Korean American motion-picture director Mora Mi-ok Stephens won the juror's grand prize in the Florida Film Festival which has been recently closed.
The film "Conventioneers" is Mora Mi-ok Stephens's feature length debut movie. Mora Stephens also won the coveted John Cassavetes Award first time as a Korean American at the 21st Independence Spirit Award in Santa Monica, California on last month.
Also, the film was shown and received high praise at the 2nd annual Los Angeles Korean International Film Festival (LAKIFF), 10th Pusan International Film Festival (PIFF), and at the 2005 Tribeca Film Festival in New York.
The movie "Conventioneers" is a blue-state-red-state love story and modern type of "Romeo and Juliet" movie. Set against last summer's Republican Convention, the actors play out a fictional story against the background of real events, real people, and real political passions. Massey (Matt Mabe), a married Republican delegate from Texas, falls hard for Lea (Woodwyn Koons), an affianced New Yorker he was attracted to in college, who's now a liberal protester who loathes the war, the president, and all that Republicans stand for.
And then there's Dylan (Alek Friedman), a one-time political activist who makes his living as a sign-language interpreter, and gets the chance of a lifetime: an offer to sign during George Bush's GOP acceptance speech. The highlight scene of this film is all three are outside Madison Square Garden; Massey in his red tie, Lea with her protest sign, and Dylan with a tee shirt decorated with a big peace symbol hidden under his dress shirt. This movie covers not only about the hopeless love between Massey and Lea but the ironies of adulthood.
Director Stephens who is standing out among American independent movies majored in International Relations at Princeton University and obtained a master's degree in the field of film-making from New York University. At this time she is producing her second feature length movie "Georgia Heat".
