Korean Dish Gaining Popularity Amid Korean Wave: Korean Air

Perhaps riding the Korean Wave surging across East Asia, with the Korean drama "Dae Jang Geum" enjoying record ratings in Hong Kong, Korea's traditional rice dish bibimbap sees new-found popularity as airline food. Korean Air said Monday the popularity of Korean drama and food in China, SE Asia and Japan meant more and more passengers were asking for bimbimbap.

Korean Air says more passengers from Southeast Asia are asking for Bibimbap, a popular Korean dish. Korean Air says Bibimbap, which is a bowl of hot rice served with assorted vegetables arranged on top, is gaining popularity as Korean pop culture continues to grow strong in the region.

The dish is said to be especially popular among people from Hong Kong since a Korean TV show about a woman who begins as an apprentice in the royal kitchen and later becomes the King's personal physician topped viewer ratings there.

Following the rising demand last month, the airline, which used to serve the dish on its long distance flights has started serving it in five shorter routes including flights to Hong Kong, Singapore and Jakarta.
