We finally get a first proper look at the heroine of "Children of a Lesser God", Kim Dan, through a new teaser and stills. After a long wait for the cryptic "sees what should not be seen" to become clearer, the video reveals what Dan's actual superpower is. My own question would be, does it come with a very creepy notification system...More
Or at least I think that's what our hero is doing, and with Kang Ji-hwan's experience in sneaky, bold and often comedic characters getting into trouble, I assume we're in for a blast. The latest filming stills released by OCN for "Children of a Lesser God" also give us a better look at our heroine on the job and a sneak peek of our intimidating prosecutor...More
2018 has entered with a bang and that includes some big celebrity names returning to Dramaland for ambitious projects. We have a few such news bits this week that you can read more about and I also take a look at fresh material for "Children of a Lesser God". Between casting news, trailers and a hefty dose of stills, we have another busy week in Dramaland...More
I see your finger-heart and raise you a finger-gun, because the "Mystery Queen Season 2" One True Work-Pairing is here to make me wish I can just jump to February. KBS has released stills of Kwon Sang-woo and Choi Kang-hee during the filming of the drama's first teaser, and the finger-gun shots are a lovely extra...More
In what is a bit of a jarring tonal and stylistic shift from the first three teasers of the series and their dark fairytale appeal, "Children of a Lesser God" decides to introduce its male lead in a more standard, sleek manner. Kang Ji-hwan's detective is here to dazzle us with his IQ of 167, which is somehow not enough to stop a Dramaland cop from being careless at a crime scene...More
Thursday casting news bites are plentiful, raining down from drama gods and promising good things. Dramaland always does that, promises good things on which it sometimes delivers. However, today's casting is looking quite juicy, and I'm happy to see these actors getting work...More

Take a big step into a hopefully lovely 2018 to view all the upcoming drama goodies we can enjoy for yet another year. Dramaland has gone on a promotional spree after the slow holiday season and we have a lot of new teasers for several series coming up. As I look to future dramas for my picks, I am ever so slightly tempted to watch "Misty" on my free time...More
OCN has been so big on crime dramas, that Death himself gets one this time around. Granted, the titular hero of "Black" is only one Reaper out of many, but the series is right up his alley anyway. The series mixes fantasy, crime and romance, although that sadly proves too much by the end of things. Where does "Black" succeed and where could things have gone better? It depends on what you are looking for, but here is my take on it...More
Look at that casting goodness. Beloved actors as far as the eye can see. Sure, we're drowning in men and mostly everyone is wearing black and looking preemptively tired, but creating a work from scratch is no picnic. Jokes aside, the cast for "Children of a Lesser God" looks impressive and judging by the serious atmosphere in these images, the story looks grim...More
OCN is remaking ABC's "Mistresses" and the why all over my face is truly a breathtaking sight. I have not watched the original UK series or the US remake, but one look at its description and genre makes me wonder how it fits into the OCN pool in general. A soap mystery drama about women in sordid and illicit affairs does sound right up Dramaland alley, on the other hand. Just not OCN...More
A fresh, exclusive Sedaily article reporting news of "Voice Season 2" states the return of Lee Ha-na, but not Jang Hyuk and it made me consider something; when is a sequel necessary, when is a spin-off wiser, and when should a work be left as is? This is something we rarely had to consider before when it came to Korean drama, and the implications of it are worth thinking about and discussing now...More
I'm still not sure what to make of the series and some latest information along with these teasers make me wonder how much of a fantasy element there will be in "Children of a Lesser God". These are definitely not the videos I expected from another run of the mill crime show with a supernatural twist, but I'm intrigued and this means that they work...More

It's been a great year for dramas and we at HanCinema have gotten to enjoy many of them. We watch, review, analyze, follow news, read your reactions, and enjoy the fruits of dramaland. William, our resident film and drama critic; Orion, our drama reviewer, news hoarder, and daily rambler; and me, Lisa, your friendly managing editor, have all gathered to share our favorite dramas of the year. Let's check out which dramas we each picked as our top two and then we'd love to hear about yours...More
With the year nearly at its end, new drama concepts and trends are emerging for 2018. The idea of cloning is a highly controversial one and for good reason. South Korea has had its own advancement in and moral debates over it, making the lack of the topic's presence in drama fiction a surprising one. "Duel" does not really focus on the existential and other implications of human cloning, but it aims to be an action thriller experience with a related twist...More

It seems that I always find my way back to crime-related drama content even when I am not actively looking for it and this time around I take a look at "Prison Playbook", which I had not given much attention to before. I also bring you deadly stills and teasers from "Bad Guys Season 2". May the upcoming imaginary crime pay off...More
Skinship is tough for Yunho in "Melo Holic" because of his superpowers. Yup, that's right. Our TVXQ star is playing a man with the ability to read minds, which is a blessing and a curse...More
One guy, Ji Soo, is jailed and holding himself up in a plank with only his arms while the other (Joo Jin-mo) is nasty slicing a fish with dead guys in his living room. Kim Dong-jun and Lee El are really getting some air time in the promotions for "Black", which stirs up anticipation for the chaebol and the doctor that the two are playing. Most human beings do not find the idea of death all that attractive, but if Korean drama is good at something, that would be persistent romanticizing of anything and everything. "Black" may be another handsome Reaper, but do not let that fool you. The series looks like a potentially solid mystery ride.
A detective possessed by a Reaper (Song Seung-heon) and a woman who can predict death (Go Ara) in the form of shadows team up and try to save lives through their unique skills. The two fight against the rules of life and death as well as the consequences of their actions...More

Holy smokes, folks! This is one intense teaser and really has me hyped to watch the drama. In it we witness the horror that Go Ara's character lives with as she sees the shadows of death. I really can't blame the woman for keeping sunglasses on at all times. But, there is hope when she meets the cop-turned-reaper who encourages her to do something about what she sees. She shortens her bangs and takes off her glasses. And......More
I adored "Bad Guys" and I'm stoked to see "Bad Guys Season 2" is rolling around in December. We only have a few grizzly stills of our bad boys and their determined faces, but if OCN and the legacy of the first series is anything to go by, we're going to be in for one heck of a ride...More
Lee El's and Kim Dong-jun's character posters for "Black" look just as wonderful as I'd expect based on OCN's polished style and the trend of the gorgeous promotional materials already dropped. Lee El looks like quite a passionate doctor with many worries while Kim Dong-jun has that young chaebol/rich kid air with a touch of sadness...More
Go Ara's character can see the shadows of people's deaths in "Black". To prevent those spectors from overwhelming her she wears sunglasses nearly all the time. In the stills we see how much her gift (or her curse) weighs on her. It's a heavy burden for her and I want to see how she weighs in against other visionaries like Gong Hyo-jin and Park Bo-young...More

Go Ara starts sees shadows of death in "Black" and one shadow follows the man who eventually becomes the reaper. We'll see...More
Lee El who has a reputation for her strong character, was featured in the October issue of ELLE. She stars in the OCN drama "Black" as a beautiful doctor...More
We finally have a hauntingly beautiful poster with both leads on it for "Black"! Song Seung-heon and Go Ara stand in front of a blur of people (or spectors?) looking like the world weighs on their shoulders. More than that cool poster, however, would you check out the picture of Song Seung-heon trying to hide in a refrigerator? I'm guessing this is from the first meeting of the reaper and the woman who foresees death...More

After last week's round up of news for romantic series, I need a little something to balance things off. Today I bring you revenge and death, although sadly not combined. "Avengers' Social Club" drops some great teasers hinting at family drama. "While You Were Sleeping - 2017" and "Black" may share the element of predicting death, but the clear differences in focused genre cover different tastes. All in all, we have a promising upcoming drama season...More
I am wickedly torn about my feelings for "Black". With the dark mood, interesting premise, and excellently executed teasers, I'm drawn towards dedicating hours of my life to this show. But at the same time, Song Seun-heon doesn't inspire confidence. He does tend to take some great roles, but has also had a few sketchy ones...More
"Black" certainly doesn't lack for ambience. Everything about these posters screams "mystery" and "thriller" from the shadows across the actors' faces to the gritty quality of the images. The show also has a confirmed start date, October 14, and an updated air time, 10:20 PM KST. So buckle up because OCN is planning another gripping drama. I don't have too much faith in Song Seung-heon, but I hope he surprises me...More

"Black" released teasers that are just as dark as its premise. Time is cruel and in Dramaland it is also a big troll, which brings us to the theme of today's dramas. I have more news, as usual, including the return of Lee Bo-young in a drama I will be keeping my eye on...More
South Korea was shaken quite badly by last year's political scandal and the absurd nature of its cult element has been widely discussed. It is only a matter of time before Dramaland takes a bigger dive into the dark side of religion after occasionally dipping its toes in it and "Save Me" might take that plunge.
Four young men struggling to get by in their challenging lives reunite with an old acquaintance who asks for their help. The woman and her family are being held captive by a religious cult. The four young men band together in order to save her and expose the cult's true face...More

Clones are the latest trend in Dramaland and like any trend in this industry, this horse will be beaten long past its expiration. For now, the still fresh topic gets its first drama with "Duel". Whether the clones in what looks like any other crime and suspense drama will be more than a gimmick remains to be seen.
Jang Deuk-cheon (Jung Jae-young) is a detective with an ill daughter. One day he becomes entagled with two clones, one innocent and one evil, and his little girl is kidnapped. The detective begins a chase against great odds to solve the mystery of his situation and find his child before it is too late...More

Jin-wook (played by Sung Hoon) is a playboy and a bit of a jerk. The first we see of the guy, he takes over a party and then walks back his sexiness with a rather ridiculous sounding excuse. As mean and selfish as Jin-wook seems at first glance, we do find out by the end that the excuse is actually evidence of Jin-wook's secret good side. Which is fortunate, since up until that point, we frequently see Jin-wook get in trouble for stuff that's not actually his fault, yet never does he seem all that sympathetic...More

Dramaland has been meticulously churning out time travel and crime dramas lately so "Tunnel - Drama" is nothing revolutionary. At the same time, the idea of a detective from the past dealing with modern society after being time-thrown into it might just give this one a little fresh edge.

Many top stars have been changing to the cable lanes in 2017. Just a few years ago, it wasn't a common thing as every single step was made into an issue. Celebrities used to follow star writers onto cable but now they are looking just at the masterpiece itself. Successful dramas like the tvN "Goblin" and "Answer Me 1988" have accelerated the potential of cable dramas. tvN drama "Tomorrow With You" is Shin Min-a's first cable drama. She is popular for her roles in "My Girlfriend is a Gumiho" and "Arang and the Magistrate", but her recent drama "Oh My Venus" wasn't too successful although she dressed up as an overweight person. This time she is a whacky character and her co-star Lee Je-hoon also chose to come back with tvN after last year's signal...More

Dramaland geniuses are rarely useful ones, but OCN likes to make its characters work for their special snowflake award. The latest ability is a keen sense of hearing which will crack a case and catch a murderer. The task of "Voice" now is to rise above gimmicks and create a suspenseful story with a twist that matters.
Two people whose lives have been touched by a serial killer work together in order to catch him. One is a tough and relentless former detective skilled in action, the other is an intelligent officer who works at an emergency call center and has a heightened sense of hearing...More

While crime shows are in general more realistic and handle more dire topics than for example fairytale romances, they do not necessarily explore their stories more deeply. Crime fluff does exist and has its own tropes that also become clichés. OCN has delivered many good dramas, but had not gone the extra mile into meaningful stories with a theme. As usual, delving into the greater context of the case quickly manages to bring up some rather dispiriting, discouraging stories that are just, well, really grim...More
Many a serial drama is guilty of reinventing the wheel, but procedural ones are by nature able to get away with it. All crime shows do the same thing, but because they handle different cases and use the hook of a mystery, they offer something new through the same format every time. 'Missing Noir M' is neither original or brilliant so far, but rather than going for gimmicks, it goes back to the basics of what makes good crime stories and mysteries appealing...More

The thematic shift for dramas is already happening and the new topic is vampirism. An interesting topic, certainly and one which has done well for Korean television before, most recently and notably through OCN's "Vampire Prosecutor" series. For better or for worse, it is kicking off the vampire trend...More
Final episodes normally do lots of callbacks, and "Doctor Frost" is no different. Unfortunately, "Doctor Frost" decides to call back to all the least interesting parts of the drama, creating a finale that's about as uninspiring as most of the normal episodes. Following the format shift seen in this year's "Reset", OCN has brought us another serial drama, meaning one focusing on a main plot, rather than offering one case per episode. It soon becomes clear why "Doctor Frost" has spent so long in production. They had to work on the soundtrack. Seriously, just listen to that. It's pretty hip stuff. Director Seong Yong-il is clearly going for a certain level of ambience here, and it's succeeding...More
As lovely as it would be to live in a world where popular entertainment is all about representation and inclusion, this is sadly not the case. Presentation matters in any industry where popularity and glamour play a part. Looks and marketability matter. Depending on the specific industry or type of work, it can sometimes be all that matters. We live in a world where gender inequality is also a reality. Men can still lead works if not strictly within the category most popular in terms of visual appeal...More
OCN's crime shows have so far been mostly a combination of procedurals and a main story. This has had its good points and bad, a good one being that things never got boring with case after case, a bad one being that the main plot of things was usually too superficial and stretched out. "Reset" focusing solely on the main story was a bold move. The question is, did it pay off? Given this was a new approach for the station, the answer would be somewhat. The show has a lot of problems, but it is a worthy attempt at what it tried to do...More
