"My reason for wanting to tell a story from the '80s is because I feel that the current societal climate is very similar. About 3 years ago I got a feeling that the era of my deceased father was suddenly coming back, an era in which everyone's good will is only reserved for their own survival and well being. But like my own father, I did not see these people as selfish fools, but sympathized with them. I wanted to portray these characters not as criminals who were on the wrong side of the law, but as people who tried their best to survive and thrive despite the conditions they were in. People innately follow the times they live in and those who ride it architect the next generation. The '80s in South Korea were an incredibly volatile decade in which a single person's decision could change the direction of an entire era. Following men who lived through that decade, I wanted to show that the eighties had more dramatic appeal than any other decade. I wanted to inquire whether it was the times that were changing the people, or if it was the people that were changing the times. Most of all, I hope that the audience can laugh and identify with these men who lived like kings in the face of loyalty, betrayal, and ambition"....More

While everyone is waiting to see what happens to the Han Ye-seul case, there are voices that claim that the weak condition of the Korean drama environment is what caused this incident.

Producers and directors of soap operas and movies may have difficulty shooting as scheduled after a group of management agencies announced they were refusing to let their actors work due to unpaid wages and performance fees.
The Corea Entertainment Management Association disclosed Wednesday a list of companies responsible for 32 dramas and films, which have failed to pay actors, along with the names of the productions, production heads and directors who made the dramas.
It said actors of the agencies will not participate in films made by the companies in question.
The collective action follows a chronic overdue payment problem in the film and drama production industry.
"We concluded that we need to take action. From now on, our actors will not appear in soap operas and movies filmed by the named production companies", the association said in a statement.
According to a survey conducted on actors at the member agencies, the performers are owed 1.5 billion won in overdue payment for dramas and 700 million won for movies.
The association said both the productions and broadcasting companies that outsourced the dramas have not made any effort to solve the problem.
"Heads of production companies failed to pay performance fees and kept making dramas after setting up another production company or change their names. Then the overdue payment problem gets bigger. Broadcasting companies know this, but they keep outsourcing, saying the payment issue is between producers and actors, and not their business", Kim Gil-ho
, director of the association, said.
He said actors belonging to the association are top stars, such as Song Hye-kyo
. "Top actresses such as Song have still not been paid for appearing in the KBS drama 'Worlds Within

KBS drama "Dream High" takes off at seven years from now, with singer "K", a graduate of Kirin Art School, appearing at the Grammy Awards ceremony. Chung Ha-myung (Bae Yong-joon), the director of Kirin High, reminisces on how all he did was strike a "break shot" (the first shot in billiards that scatters the balls). The problem with the first episode of "Dream High" was in those balls. The way Ko Hye-mi (played by Suzy), the so-called genius in vocal music, jeers at popular culture went beyond arrogance to make it seem forced and the scene where Jin-guk (Ok Taecyeon) easily fights off the men who are after Hye-mi, several loan sharks including their boss (Ahn Kil-gang) who are after her father, or the overuse of slow motion was cliche enough to be seen in a scene of an online comic book...More

Just like the results on year-end awards ceremonies, no choice will be supported by everyone. A drama cannot be considered 'better' just because more people have seen it nor can it be considered 'proper' just because more people like it. The drama, director, writer and actor of the year picked by the reporters and critics of 10Asia are strictly based on personal taste. The value of KBS TV series "The Slave Hunter" will not diminish just because KBS drama "Sungkyunkwan Scandal" beat it out by one vote to take the title of drama of the year. And the fact that while last year, actress Ko Hyun-jung received an overwhelming number of the votes for her role in MBC's "Queen Seon-deok" for best actress, but that this year Jang Hyuk and many other names were mentioned, may be proof that the Korean drama industry depicted on a larger variety of people. But one thing 10Asia can tell you for sure is that our writers have observed and loved Korean dramas during the past year like no other. So please, just sit back and enjoy.

There are things that cannot be expressed through annual awards ceremonies. The big trophies are not enough to describe the gratitude we feel for the dramas that contributed to brightening our days during the past year. This is why 10Asia is presenting the "Thank You" list in which we selected 10 memorable dramas. This is a shout-out to all those dramas that at time melted our hearts with highly appealing looks, made our hands and feet cringe yet leave our eyes and mouths smiling with famous lines, delighted us at the mere sight of some characters and left the single viewers green with jealously with the romance scenes. Let us thank all these dramas that took our emotions on a most exciting roller coaster ride. So thank you!

It has become awkward to call Kim Yoo-jung a 'child actress'. Other than the fact that she is young, her experience and acting skill she displays on the small and big screen easily surpasses that of adult actors.
In MBC TV series "Dong Yi", she held onto the attention of viewers in the show's early stages playing the young version of Dong Yi (Han Hyo-joo), in KBS drama "Grudge: The Revolt of Gumiho" she showed the pitiful state her character is in as the weak one who holds deep sorrow within as well as being the protagonist of the tragic melodrama, and in MBC's "Flame of Desire" she extraordinarily pulled off the double role as the young versions of Na-young (Shin Eun-kyoung) and Hye-jin (Seo Woo) who are venomous to the point they are naughty. Popular programs such as "Superstar K - Season 2","High Kick Through The Roof", and "Bread, Love and Dreams" had entered the cradle of buzzwords, and those buzzwords had been talked about for a year by people, in pleasant times as well as times of suffering. Amid the race for presidency in the ruling party's camp, the sudden scandal with slush fund throws the main candidate off the balance. His wife confesses to him that it was her doing so he takes off to meet the prosecutors only to get shot on his way. All these events happened in less than half an hour in new KBS series "President", showing how very bold the drama is in unfolding so many incidents at once. Unlike other political dramas such as SBS series "THE CITY HALL" or "Daemul - Big Thing" which have female characters substitute a man's desire for power, "President" shows a world where one's desire for power is so strong that it is unbearable to place it in anyone else's hands...More

"SBS TV series 'Daemul - Big Thing' bothers you, right?" This was the first question the production team for KBS drama "President" received at a press conference held ahead of the drama's premiere on December 15. It was not that hard to guess that question would come up sooner or later. After all, both dramas are about politics with both main characters striving to become presidents and to top it off, they will air on same day and time slot. This practically stole attention to the fact that it will be the first time in 19 years that actor Choi Soo-jong and actress Ha Hee-ra, married in real life, have come together as couple in the upcoming show as well, as president and the first lady, to be more precise. But Choi, who will play the role of Jang Il-joon assures that the two dramas "are entirely different dramas". So how will the two differ? Park Min-young [Lee Jin-hyuk/10Asia]
Actress Park Min-young rose to instant stardom through her debut role in MBC smash-hit sitcom "High Kick!" in 2006 by managing to shine amidst the throng of diverse characters with her role as Kang Youmi, an ignorent yet confident and cheerful girl in high school.
Yet such fast-obtained popularity rarely lasts for long and the industry does not allow an actress to see slow growth. In KBS drama "I Am Sam" she played a character who holds her emotions within herself while bullied by others rather than immediately respond like Youmi from "High Kick!" would have but viewers remembered her as the same cheerful high school student rather than notice the change between the two and in her acting skills.
She then did fairly well in pulling off her role as a princess who depicts on the most tragic narrative through traditional drama "Princess Ja Myung Go" but the low ratings the depressing show scored was applied to Park as well...More
Actor Lee Jung-jin [10Asia/Chae Ki-won]
"You might end up kissing your acting career good bye". This is what veteran comedian Lee Kyung-kyu said to actor Lee Jung-jin when he first appeared on KBS variety show "Happy Sunday" in March 2009. At the time he was being admitted as one of the regular members of the show's segment "What Makes a Man" and it was a joke thrown to Lee who would be the youngest among the crew fit to be called a middle-aged men's club but not completely groundless given his position at the time. It was true that Lee belonged in the heartthrob category, good looking enough to star as a hero in the MBC drama "I Love You, Don't Cry" (2009) but at the same time still lacking in presence outside the screen. His joining the variety program also posed risk to weakening the weak presence he had at the time. But after a year and a half we all know that it was all unnecessary concern...More
KBS "Drama Special - Pianist" [10Asia/ Chae Ki-won]
No talent can blossom without financial backup and love can become servile when penniless. For part-time piano instructor In-sa (Han Ji-hye) who is hard pressed even by her own students to prove her skills by playing Chopin on the spot, dream is just another word for failure. But failure is a foreign concept for 21-year- old Je-ro (Minho) who has never had any dreams. So when In-sa asked Je-ro about his dream all he could say was that it has never crossed his mind. True to his words, he was never passionate about anything. How wonderful it would be if the love between a pure genius and a woman who recognizes him for his gift could wash away all their past wounds. But life is just not that simple...More

Lee Jung-jin [10Asia]
"I am actor Lee Jung-jin and I'm still best-known for 2004 film 'Once Upon A Time In Highschool'", said the actor at the press conference for his new film "Troubleshooter" that premiered in September. It is not that he did not star in other films during the past six years. In film "Mapado" (2005) he evoked laughter by appearing in embarrassing 'mompe' pants (loose-fitting attire usually worn by old woman) and practically betraying his former career as a model and in MBC drama "9 End 2 Outs" (2007)" he offered his viewers with a different form of fun by playing a character full of twists called Byun Hyung-tae who looks like a perfectly charming guy only on the surface. And although he acted like a loser in the drama, writing down all the misdeeds his girlfriend makes and even fighting with her physically if necessary, he was still able to win women's hearts by being there when his girlfriend needed him the most. Nonetheless, it is the 2004 film "Once Upon A Time In Highschool" that stands as the most important character to refer to when describing actor Lee. Nothing could stop his character, the charismatic Woo-sik, who could scare off his opponents with just a few words. And he was the same when he had to leave school after losing in a fight against his rival or falling in love, knowing no hesitation. Just like Eun-joo (Han Ga-in) had chosen Woo-sik over the gentle, exemplary student Hyun-soo (kwon Sang-woo), it is this captivating aura that made Lee unforgettable to the audience...More

Actor Yoo Ah-in [Chae Ki-won/10Asia]
Actor Yoo Ah-in has played a variety of roles, particularly of characters in their youths from different walks of life starting with the sweet high schooler in KBS TV series "Sharp" to the lost teenager in film "Boys of Tomorrow" to the lonely warrior in KBS' "Mighty Chil-woo" to the energetic patissier aspirant in film "Antique" and the 'guy these days' in KBS' "He Who Can't Marry".
Then most recently, he was Moon Jae-shin in KBS drama "Sungkyunkwan Scandal" who was the outsider of royal academy SungKyunKwan, a fighter who resists corrupt society, and a romantist who watched the woman he loves from afar -- the very symbol of youths experiencing growing pains.
Yoo is 24 now and has grown a beard on his tanned face but whenever he smiles, he goes back to being the fair-complexioned boy whom viewers first saw on screen seven years ago. 10Asia met with the actor who came up with his own stage name Ah-in, meaning 'ein' in German, to constantly remind himself that he is a unique being in this world. It was not easy keeping up with the numerous ideas existing within the young man but it was definitely worth hearing.
10: You wrapped up filming of "Sungkyunkwan Scandal" on the day it ended its run. How have you spent the past few days? I think you must've been busy doing everything you hadn't been able to recently.
Yoo Ah-in: I've been drinking the whole time since I don't have to work at night. (laugh) But no matter till how late I drink, I've been waking up early because it's become a habit from filming "Sungkyunkwan Scandal". It makes me angry. (laugh) I actually get drunk pretty easily, maybe off half a bottle of soju [Korean vodka]? And I stay that way until I pass out. But I can't pull all-nighters anymore. I go home at around two or three in the morning. Why am I talking about drinking?...More
Actor Bae Soo-bin acts a scene from KBS "Drama Special - Just Say It!" at the broadcaster's drama set in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea on November 8, 2010. [Chae Ki-won/10Asia]
“I used to take on roles that usually evoked unrealistic fantasy,” actor Bae Soo-bin who will star in the 23rd episode of the omnibus TV series KBS Drama Special "Just Say It!” admitted in regards to the parts he played for the past few years. Note that he just said that in the past tense. In the recent KBS single- episode drama “Just Say It!” Bae will play Gi-young, a lazy bum working in a district office, who hates his job and continues to be hung up over his first love of nine years ago. Given the past roles he has played in other dramas, such as the royal guard Cha Cheon-soo in MBC historical drama “Dong Yi" (2010), Park Joon-se in SBS series “Shining Inheritance" (2009), and King Jeong-jo in SBS drama “Painter of the Wind" (2008) where he was flawless physically and mentally, this is quite a change. So how will he pull off a pitiful character like Gi-young and what kind of meaning does this have for Bae? Below is 10Asia's interview with the actor at the set for the show...More

She made her debut playing Park Na-ri, one of the main characters, in KBS' TV "School" and took on the female lead in MBC's "I Love You Hyun-jung" and "Young-Jae's Golden Days" but recently has taken on memorable yet small roles in "Five Senses of Eros", "Runaway from Home" and "Ha Ha Ha". 10Asia was curious to know the mindset of the actress who recently starred in MBC's one-act drama "Best Theatre - We Teach Love" and now KBS' "Drama Special - Just Say It!"...More

KBS series "Drama City" which featured short, omnibus stories for the past 14 years in Korea, finished its run in 2008. Two years and two months passed since then and during that time, dramas adapted from comic books or online novels rose to the mainstream, leaving even less space for short dramas to make a comeback. Then on May 15, single-episode series did make a comeback through 24-part KBS Drama Special's first episode "Drama Special - Red Candy" by veteran scriptwriter Noh Hee-kyeong. Writer Kim Tae-heui [Lee Jin-hyuk/10Asia]
KBS TV series “Sungkyunkwan Scandal” finished its run on November 2. In the story set in late 18th century Joseon, a girl named Kim Yoon-hee (Park Min-young) entered the royal academy of SungKyunKwan disguised as a boy where she learned that true learning heads toward people and that they are the very foundation of the country. King Jeongjo (Jo Sung-ha) too tells her, “Now it's your turn to dream of a new future for Joseon.” Trying to describe the ideals young people have is not easy. One wrong step and it can sound like an empty slogan or childish passion. That was not the case for Kim Tae-heui though, the script writer of drama "Sungkyunkwan Scandal" who pulled it off by adding modernity and refreshing new scenes to the already charming SungKyungKwan story based on the book “The Days of SungKyunKwan Students.” 10 Asia interviewed Kim just few hours before the drama wrapped up.
10: “Sungkyunkwan Scandal” was seen in various lights. Some saw it as an up-and-coming story, some as a historical political drama and others simply as melodrama. How did you decide on the direction of the story?
Kim Tae-heui: Before getting into the synopsis I had a lot of fun watching the SBS drama “Shining Inheritance”...More
Writer Kim Tae-heui [Lee Jin-hyuk/10Asia]
10: After episode 15, it seemed that you were trying to insert more stories into the drama and that caused some trouble to the flow of the drama. What do you regret the most?
Kim Tae-heui: I still don't know whether it was because I added “Geumdeungjisa” then rushed in having to wrap up the latter half of the story, or whether I should have just dealt with it probably and made the story longer. But I was worried that may lower the ratings for the show. (laugh). I tend to make my scripts long so most of the portions edited beforehand in the script was usually about Geumdeungjisa. It's something I'll reflect upon now and in the future when I do the next project.
10: But on the other hand, I believe there was a reason you included Geumdeungjisa episode in the drama, as a writer.
Kim Tae-heui: A girl in disguise as a boy didn't seem strong enough of an impact for the story. I was also worried with what else I should keep up the tension of the story after Yoo-hee's gender is revealed. And Geumdeungjisa was necessary in turning the original story into a drama. For example Hongbyeokseo (the red messenger) in the book tells a lot about problems in society but in doing the same thing in drama, it could be easily forgotten so I needed something to bring all the main characters together. Also, by linking it with King Jeongjo's reform plan I thought I could make the story much richer...More

It was a dream I did not want to wake up from, something I have not felt for some time. My name is Oh Chang-suk. My grandfather was the one who came up with my name.

I am currently majoring in industrial design at Sejong University. I became really burnt out after spending 15 hours a day working on projects for over a year and half. I grew a beard just like Robinson Crusoe, slept on a fold-out bed and washed my hair in the bathroom sink. (laugh) On top of that, design is something that you have to put every inch of yourself into and it becomes really tough if there's an error on your computer while you are working since all your work gets deleted. Actress Kim So-yeon says "feels like I am back at the starting line"
Out of three Wednesday/Thursday evening dramas, which all premiered on the same day last March, SBS TV series "Prosecutor Princess" never scored the No. 1 viewership rating during its run. However, the show remained a well-made drama till the end with its tight storyline and unique characters played by all the right actors. It would not be an exaggeration to say that actress Kim So-yeon, who played the title character, displayed such impressive acting skills that it might perhaps be the biggest achievement anyone has made in the first half of the year. Even though it wasn't the so-called 'possessed acting', Kim So-yeon created an interesting chemistry seen in the perfect match-up of an actress and her character. After a long hiatus and challenging times, the actress, who used to be the representative star of trendy dramas in the 90s, is back at a brand new starting line. And she is more hungry for acting now more than ever, she says. 10Asia interviewed Kim So-yeon, whose sincerity shone through during the interview and was moving at unsuspecting moments...More

Joint press interview with the cast of MBC TV series "Dong Yi"
Korean actor Ji Jin-hee on the set of TV series "Dong Yi" [MBC]
Ji Jin-hee says he is "happy to break stereotype" playing a king
The introduction of the "adorable King Sook-jong" was a landmark event for MBC TV series "Dong Yi" and the history of traditional dramas on the small screen. King Sook-jong is shown as a king who showers his royal blessings upon his servant court ladies with a bright smile, and one who runs around freely when he goes outside the palace walls for the first time. While the new character might have been born from director Lee Byeong-hoon's reinterpretation and writer Kim I-yeong's script, it was actor Ji Jin-hee who completed the transformation. Actress Kim So-eun [Chae Ki-won/10Asia]
They say a picture is worth a thousand words but one's voice sometimes has power beyond what one sees. That is why Kim So-eun stands out amongst all the numerous girls that have cheeks as rosy as peaches. Her slightly low tone of voice which is in contrast to her bubbly appearance, discerns her as an actress of good conduct yet one with determination. What stood out more than the dignity cast on her small face or the tears that wet her cheeks was the reverberation and depth of her voice in KBS drama "The Iron Empress" and in "Boys over Flowers", "He Who Can't Marry" and "Good Days when the Wind Blows", her voice once again did not go unnoticed...More
6. Work and Love, Love and Work: The story for all three stories are set at the workplace
"Prosecutor Princess": It is impossible to perfectly reenact the process of investigation that prosecutors carry out unless the program is a reality documentary. However, "Prosecutor Princess" adds an abundance of detail into depicting the daily life of a civil servant. The show has received reviews that even regular office workers can relate to the portrayal of the job description of a rookie prosecutor. "Princess" could become a good example of an office drama if it lays out the process of investigations with common sense.
"Personal Taste": One can't really say it is specialized. The drama does not explain through what process a house is designed, how to trim the different kinds of wood in order to make furniture, or what the necessary preparations are in carrying out a bidding. The scenes where Park Gae-in takes part in a furniture exhibition and has Jun Jin-ho cut the acrylic from a blind in order to avoid an emergency situation adds onto the sense of reality in telling the difficulties one struggles as an employee.
"Cinderella's Sister": Everyone gathers together at the makgeolli brewery called "Daesungdoga". However, this Goo Dae-sung's world of abundance and is one of the things that Song Gang-sook wants, but it does not display any characteristics as a work place. One might forget that it is a brewery, if it did not show the scene of Goo Hyo-seon (played by Seo Woo) drinking the residue left after rice liquor is drained before going to school. As a whole, the story of the self righteous self-made owner, the femme fatale-like new lady of the house, and the naive yet talkative workers and large family all seem like trite set-ups...More

Actress Han Chae-young [Lee Jin-hyuk/10Asia]
There are many beautiful women in this world. But not everyone is called 'Barbie doll'. After making herself first known through KBS TV series "Autumn in my Heart", Han Chae-young has always been recognized for her unrivaled beauty. Yet at the same time, her 'goddess-like' appearance was also what created a distance between her and the audience.
So could it be that she herself sensed the disharmony that although she has a beauty which people cannot easily take their eyes off, it also makes it hard for people to approach her? Because for a while, Han appeared on the small screen playing roles far from her long-known image. Yet the popularity she gained from playing a lively high school girl in KBS TV series "Sassy Girl, Chun-hyang" or the impassioned acting she showed as an ordinary girl looking for employment in MBC's "Fireworks - 2006" did not help this star descend to the real world. It became certain last year that he had secured a position on the small screen when he made the hearts of many female viewers flutter through KBS drama "Boys over Flowers".
Kim then showed how he had finally become a 'man' and one that is ready to play a lead role through SBS TV series "Dream - Drama". "Expressing a character is similar to trying on different clothes. The characters I played in 'Boys over Flowers' or 'Dream - Drama' were articles of clothing I tried on as a hanger or mannequin. My name is Kim Ji-suk. My real name is Kim Bo-suk. When I first debuted as a singer with my real name, many people confused me with senior actors Jung Bo-suk and Kim Bo-sung. The CEO of the agency I was at came up with the part 'Ji' for my name. He was also the one who came with actress Choi Ji-woo's name.
I was born on April 21, 1981. My family is composed of my parents, my older brother who is two years old than me and younger brother who just took his college entrance exams. My older brother and I have different brain structures. He is a member of Mensa and he also attended Oxford and KAIST. I wasn't too bad at my studies either but I wanted my parents to acknowledge me as much as they did my brother. That was the real reason I started acting.
My parents emphasized education and because of that I was lucky to have attended middle and high school in England. I was able to play soccer on vast green fields, but at the time I didn't appreciate it. I still dream about those green fields sometimes.
What I got out of my studies in England was a sense of professionalism and autonomy. I enjoyed the system where from a young age, you are able to study in the field that you wanted to pursue without someone forcing you. ...More

Year-end drama awards have been criticized for being too generous when giving out awards and also not meeting the public's consensus. Last year's events were indeed generous, yet there were no decisions that caused anyone to shake their heads. However, there were distinctive trends that made the three events different from the past.

Celebrities are always hounded by those trying to dig up scandals and personal affairs. Some of these stories may be matters of interest, but others may ruin a person's integrity and cause them to stop their public activities.
Celebrities can enjoy wealth, fame and adoration, but all these can disappear with just one bad scandal. Some celebrities barely survive such turmoil while others may disappear from the public eye.
As usual, many celebrity scandals were exposed this year whether we want to hear them or not.
Continuing on the theme of last week's article, the saju of Tiger Woods, this week focuses on Lee Byung-hun
, who is also embroiled in a scandal.
Lee, a "hallyu", or Korean Wave, star who appears in the KBS drama "IRIS"

After meeting in Canada in 2008 during a promotional tour for the movie "The Good, the Bad, the Weird

KBS, the biggest of the country's four national television networks, plans to exploit multicasting technology to add to the number of channels beamed over the airwaves.
The announcement, however, has cable television operators and the rest of the pay-TV industry fuming, as they fear the possibilities of bulked-up terrestrial channel packages choking off their viewership.
Multicasting, or multimode services (MMS) as KBS prefers to call it, refers to the use of digital compression technology to broadcast several television channels in the bandwidth space of a current analog broadcast signal.
The television industry has been discussing multicast offerings since local stations first transmitted their signals digitally in 2001, and the government-mandated switch to all-digital broadcasting by 2012 clearly makes the possibilities more intriguing.
KBS currently has two terrestrial channels, KBS 1 and 2, and also has four channels provided to cable and television networks - KBS Prime, KBS Drama, KBS N Sports and KBS Joy.

1. The Death of Celebrities in 2008
The suicide death of actor Ahn Jae-hwan
because his debt shocked the nation. Then, the suicide death of Korea's commercial queen and sweetheart, Choi Jin-sil
, friend to Ahn and his wife/comedian Jung Sun-hee
, jolted the nation. Choi's death hit the nation hard, with fellow celebrities following suit, including transsexual actress
Jang Chae-won, model Kim Ji-hoo, and vocal group M Street's leader Lee Seo-hyun.
Many stars passed away, leaving the entertainment industry and its fans grieving.
The first celebrity to leave fans was Kim Chang-ik, youngest member of the group Sanulrim. He was followed by famed composer Lee Young-hun, who died in February after suffering from colon cancer. In April, Turtleman from the pop group "Turtles" died from a heart attack, while Kim Min-soo
, member of the pop group Monday Kiz, passed away after being involved in a motorcycle accident.
Model Ion also died in a motorcycle accident. Most recently, actor Park Kwang-jeong
passed away after suffering from lung cancer.
2. The Popularity in "Real" Reality Shows
This year welcomed various reality shows, some new and some simply upgraded. The key factor of this year's reality programs is that the shows represent raw realism. MBC's "Infinity Challenge" showed its group practicing for a Latin dance competition and also a nationwide aerobic competition. KBS' "One Day Two Nights" presented a celebrity group visiting villages and carrying out tasks and games along the way. MBC's "We've Got Married" put popular celebrity couples in "marriages" and showed them living in the same house, and spending time together like other married couples. SBS joined in the fun with "The Family is Out", which brought a number of celebrities to the country picking fruits and vegetables, working in the fields and cooking things for themselves.
3. The Comeback of Big Stars and Rise of Idol Groups
The pop scene this year was busy with the return of big stars as well as the rise of hip pop idol groups. Singer Kim Gun-mo
appeared with his new album, which was made with composer Kim Chang-wan

Song added that her co-star Hyun Bin
tried his best to calm down her nerves by telling her that there are good times and bad times and that she shouldn't care too much about the viewer ratings.
Whenever a series with a similar theme to a previous hit comes out, it is almost certain to get severely criticized.
KBS' "Worlds Within
", a new drama that bears striking similarities to SBS' "On Air"
, will face judgment tonight when it airs its first episode.
Like "On Air"
, this star-studded series tracks the drama production process. But unlike its predecessor - which revolved around a manager, an actress, a scriptwriter and a producer - "Worlds Within
" focuses on the relationship between two program directors, played by celebrities Song Hye-kyo

In the last few years, Korean films, TV dramas and pop music have become immensely popular abroad, a phenomenon known as the Korean Wave. This is the 26th in a series of essays by a select group of scholars and journalists looking at the spread of Korean pop culture in Southeast Asian countries and beyond. - Ed.
The term "Korean Wave" or "Hallyu" was initially coined in China to describe a newfound interest in Korean pop culture in China in the late 1990s. At the center of it all was the now-defunct boy band H.O.T. (High-five of Teenagers), two of whose albums were exported to China in 1998.
Many people underestimate the strategic side of the iconic band's success in China, though, assuming that the quintet was simply lucky to become the first Korean pop musicians to be active in China, at a time when the country's music scene was not very well developed.
Until last year, Ahn Chil-hyun - lead singer of the band, and better known by his stage name, Kangta
- was one of them.
The charismatic singer and songwriter, who has written more than 100 songs for H.O.T. and other popular K-pop bands such as NRG and Fly to the Sky, remembers their first concert in Beijing in July 2000 as something wonderful, even magical. "I thought like, 'Man, I'm one heck of a lucky guy'," Ahn told The Korea Herald, recollecting their Chinese debut, which attracted more than 13,000 people. "Before then, we had never performed in China, and besides, Korean pop stars were no...More

Actor Jang Geun-suk
, 20, captured the essence of KBS's newest drama "Hong Gil Dong
" when he said, "I think 'Hong Gil Dong
' truly is a fusion drama".
Playing a troubled crown prince on the run in this new drama, Jang added, "It's got a very young and energetic storyline".
Young and fresh are the right words to use when referring to "Hong Gil Dong
", which started last Wednesday night on KBS 2. This new take on the traditional historical drama presents the most unlikely mix of global pop culture references to ever hit TV screens.
From Hong Kong action stunts to Bollywood belly dancing to a touch of Shakespearean stage humor, this drama gives the classic story of one of Korea's most popular heroes, Hong Gil-dong, a radical makeover.
The original Hong Gil-dong, upon which this drama is based, was a heroic character from an old Korean novel written in the Joseon Dynasty. A Korean Robin Hood, the original Hong was depicted as a model hero. Morally upright, ...More
