▣ Salin-ui Chuok (Memories of Murder) (2003)
Saturday at noon
Seoul Selection Bookstore
With the right combination of entertainment and social awareness, "Memories of Murder" became a huge hit last year, topping the local box office and sweeping most of the major film awards. Based on a real serial murder case that took place in the mid-1980s in the town of Hwasong, Kyonggi Province, the film takes the format of a mystery thriller but grapples with the social constraints of its times. The two detectives in charge of the case, played impressively by Song Gang-ho and Kim Sang-kyung, are forced to work within the limitations of their environment, as well as their own limitations and mistakes. This uncertainty pervades throughout the film and gets even stronger when a suspect is found. While director Bong Joon-ho refrains from outright criticism, there's a sense of quiet indignation that takes the thoroughly entertaining film to a deeper level. On DVD.
