The Korean Federation of Teachers' Associations asked 1,645 teachers at primary and secondary schools nationwide if they think mobile phones should be allowed during school hours and found that a whopping 97 percent are against the idea.

Some 44.3 percent of teachers claimed that the ban is needed to protect their right to carry out lessons and guide students, while 41.4 percent said smartphones obstruct learning and educational activities.

Most schools collect students' mobile phones in the morning and return them at the end of the day.
