Small-Budget Filmmaker Attracts Big Interest

Kang Yeong-man, whose name is in the Guinness Book of Records for making the film with the lowest budget ever to go on release in the U.S. -- US$980 -- is attracting lively interest for his latest movie. Following the ultra-low budget "Cupid's Mistake" in 2000, Kang's "The Last Eve" caught the eye of buyers from around the world at the American Film Market that ended on Wednesday in Santa Monica, California. Buyers from the U.S., Turkey, Spain, England, Thailand, France and Korea were interested, while the director's "Soap Girl" has already been sold to Singapore and Taiwan.

Kang minimizes production cost by writing the screenplay, producing and directing all by himself. The self-confessed "yokel" was born in Seosan, South Chungcheong Province, and graduated from Hongik University's Department of Visual Communication Design. In 1994, he went to the U.S. to study film directing, settling in Los Angeles in 1997. His next film will be "Kimchee Warrior", the tale of a man who tries to defend his family tradition against a Japanese scheme to steal the secret of making kimchi.
